Venetian people wore masks to conceal their identity with an aim to remove any social differences during the celebration. It was taken as a means to do away with different social status and mingle anonymously with each other. The celebration continued till the carnival was outlawed in 1797, under the rule of Francis II, the Holy Roman Emperor. This was done to stop some people who were using masks as an opportunity to get away with petty crimes. In 1979, the Italian Government restarted this carnival with an aim to boost tourism.
