Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been named the head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This decision comes approximately three months after Ponting ended his seven-year association with Delhi Capitals.
Ricky Ponting has reportedly signed a multi-year contract with Punjab Kings and will be responsible for assembling the coaching staff before the 2025 season begins. The current coaching unit includes:
• Trevor Bayliss – Head Coach
• Sanjay Bangar – Head of Cricket Development
• Charl Langveldt – Fast-Bowling Coach
• Sunil Joshi – Spin-Bowling Coach
Ponting is expected to make changes and finalize the staff ahead of the new season.
Ricky Ponting becomes the sixth head coach for PBKS in the last seven IPL seasons. The franchise has struggled to find consistent success, having made the playoffs only twice in its history and not reaching the knockout stages in the past decade. In the 2024 season, PBKS finished ninth on the points table.
Ponting’s first major task will be navigating the 2025 IPL mega auction, the details of which have not yet been released by the IPL governing council. His responsibilities will include determining the core group of players for retention and identifying a new team leader, as current captain Shikhar Dhawan recently announced his retirement from international cricket.
Will PBKS win their first IPL title under Ricky Ponting’s guidance? What do you think?
