Rishabh Pant etched his name in the record books on Day 4 of the first Test against New Zealand at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, becoming the fastest Indian wicketkeeper to score 2500 Test runs. Pant reached the milestone in just 62 innings, surpassing former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had previously held the record with 69 innings. Farokh Engineer, another legendary Indian cricketer, had earlier set the record in 82 innings.
Pant’s aggressive innings of 53 off 56 balls was crucial in India’s spirited fightback, as they reached 344/3 by lunch, just 12 runs behind New Zealand’s first-innings total of 402. Alongside Sarfaraz Khan, who scored his maiden Test century, Pant’s counter-attacking approach helped India recover from an early wobble.
Despite suffering a knee injury while keeping on Day 3, Pant showed no signs of discomfort as he resumed on Day 4. Starting cautiously, he quickly shifted gears with his signature aggressive style, smashing two sixes off left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel and unleashing a series of elegant drives and sweeps. As of now, India’s score is 433/4 with Rishabh Pant (99*) and KL Rahul (11*) at the crease and India has taken the lead of 77 runs
