In raids across Gujarat, four people were arrested with fake antibiotic medications worth Rs 17.5 lakh used to treat critical ailments, an official said Sunday. The FDA stated that some of these people were “benami” medical reps who delivered bogus drugs to doctors.
It said FDCA searches in Nadiad, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot seized phony narcotics.
“Fake antibiotic drugs worth Rs 17.5 lakh used to treat serious diseases were seized from Ahmedabad and other cities,” FDCA Commissioner HG Koshia said.
The FDCA claimed it arrested Khimaram Kumhar in Ahmedabad with 99 boxes of POSMOX CV 625 antibiotic tablets worth Rs 2,61,250 on Friday after receiving a tip.
When questioned, the man said Arun Amera, an Ahmedabad resident, provided the phony drugs to him and led officials to Vipul Degda.
Five counterfeit antibiotics worth Rs 4,83,300 were seized from Degda, the notification stated.
Degda led officials to questioned Darshan Vyas.
The FDCA found on Degda’s phone that he sold bogus antibiotics to doctors in various state cities without bills.
It added that officials raided Ahmedabad and other locations and confiscated Rs 10.50 lakh in bogus antibiotics.
“Some of these persons worked as medical representatives of benami companies and used to deliver these fake antibiotic medicines to doctors,” a release said.
These medications were made by a Baddi, Himachal Pradesh pharmaceutical firm, according to the FDCA investigation.
When the FDCA here contacted authorities in Himachal Pradesh, they said no such manufacturing firm existed, the release said.
The four persons have been detained and handed over to Isanpur police in Ahmedabad for further investigati
on, it said, adding a case was registered under provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
