Rs 3 crore needed to clean Delhi’s hazardous air for a week

Delhi’s hazardous air can be cleaned for a week for Rs 3 crore, according to IIT Kanpur researchers. Project partners with Delhi to cover 300 square kilometers of the National Capital Region…

IIT Kanpur researchers said Rs 3 crore will clean Delhi’s hazardous air for a week.

They stated air-bound cloud seeding of one square kilometer will cost Rs 1 lakh. A 300-square-kilometer cloud is being targeted by the institute and the Delhi government in an artificial rain project coordinated by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Delhi and nearby areas have had poor air quality for a week.

“We see a 300-square-kilometer cloud. We aim to cover Delhi’s 1,200-square-km surface “Manindra Agrawal, IIT Kanpur computer science and engineering professor, told ET.

IIT Kanpur researchers discussed the concept with Delhi government officials on Wednesday.

For present, sufficient clouds and approvals are priorities. The artificial rain project to reduce capital air pollution requires at least four approvals.

“These include approvals from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Airport Authority of India, Ministry of Defence and Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA),” Agrawal added.

Conclusion

IIT Kanpur researchers’ novel approach to Delhi’s air pollution problem is promising. Cloud seeding technology can induce artificial rains and clear the air for around Rs 3 crore. IIT Kanpur and the Delhi government are aggressive in tackling this environmental concern. Approvals and acceptable cloud conditions are crucial to project success. If effective, this artificial rain approach could relieve Delhi’s citizens and inspire other cities with air pollution issues.
