Analyzed data of 26 individuals who had undergone keratin treatments in past indicated a higher prevalence of kidney damage markers. In 7 individuals there were signs of acute tubular injury as seen in their biopsies.
Keratin-based hair treatment is one of the most sought-after hair styling methods in the beauty industry. however recent research reveals a horrific side of this most popular hair straightening procedure. In a recent study published by the American Journal of Kidney Diseases and another from ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’ suggest that keratin-based hair straightening products containing glyoxylic acid increase the potential risks of AKI, (acute kidney injury).
There have been many cases in recent times where young females both in India and the rest of the world who went for keratin treatment thrice or more (once a year) eventually landed up in hospitals with one or both kidneys damaged or development of cancerous like symptoms in other parts of the body. The reason is the formation of oxalate crystals in the kidneys. Doctors suggested that during the hair treatment process, the glycolic acid present in the cream seeped into the bloodstream through the scalp, leading to the formation of harmful oxalate crystals.
In the past when Keratin treatments, also known as Brazilian blowouts, were introduced in the haircare segment it contained chemicals such as formaldehyde to straighten and strengthen hair. However, these chemicals led to adverse reactions affecting the hair, skin, and eyes of both salon workers and clients. Later on, the chemical was replaced with a high concentration of glycolic acid.
Here’s how the glycolic acid in keratin treatments poses a unique risk and may affect the kidney and lead to its toxicity:
- Glycolic acid seeps into the blood.
- It gets converted into glyoxylic acid.
- Finally, it forms oxalate, which can harm the kidneys
Nevertheless, experts are calling for more in-depth research on this subject. In the meanwhile, healthcare specialists recommend people, the following to mitigate some risks.
- Use of protective gear and proper ventilation during application,
- Regular consultation with dermatologists,
- Opting for certified salons, and
- Limiting treatment frequency.
Undoubtedly, these recent studies add to growing concerns about the safety of cosmetic products and procedures, highlighting the importance of informed decision-making and regulation in the beauty industry.
In conclusion, further studies are needed to confirm this association between keratin treatments and kidney health. Well for now! A word of caution for both consumers and professionals- Choose your product wisely for the sake of long-term health.
