On Day 1 of the second Test between India and New Zealand at the MCA Stadium in Pune, Sarfaraz Khan played a pivotal role in securing a crucial breakthrough for India. Sarfaraz Khan, preferred over KL Rahul for this match, successfully convinced captain Rohit Sharma to go for a DRS (Decision Review System) call, even when regular wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, typically trusted for such calls, was unsure.
The incident occurred on the last ball of the 24th over when Ravichandran Ashwin, slightly off his usual precision, delivered a ball that pitched on middle stump and angled down the leg side. New Zealand’s batter Will Young instinctively attempted a flick shot but missed, prompting an appeal from the Indian fielders. The on-field umpire, however, remained unmoved.
Sarfaraz, positioned at forward short leg, was adamant that Young had edged the ball. He immediately urged Rohit to review the decision. While Pant showed little interest in the review, Sarfaraz found support from Virat Kohli. Together, they persuaded Rohit Sharma to take the DRS.
Their instinct proved correct, as replays revealed that the ball had grazed Young’s gloves before being caught by Pant. The UltraEdge technology confirmed a faint spike as the ball passed the gloves, prompting the third umpire to overturn the on-field decision, giving India their second wicket of the morning.
