Sayali Satghare of Gujarat Giants Steps in as WPL’s First Concussion Substitute

Sayali Satghare of the Gujarat Giants became the first-ever concussion substitute in the history of the Women’s Premier League. On March 3, Sunday, during the Gujarat Giants vs. Delhi Capitals WPL 2024 match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Sayali came in for D Hemalatha.

Hemalatha took a knock on her forehead in the 15th over of the Delhi Capitals innings while attempting to catch a delivery from Kathryn Bryce at deep mid-wicket. Hemalatha was unable to grasp Jess Jonassen’s grab, as she was whipped directly to her. In addition to dropping a sitter, Hemalatha hurt herself during the process and the physic removed her from the field.

Sayali was allowed to replace Hemalatha during their chase of 164 runs, since the latter was declared out of the game due to a concussion. In the Gujarat Giants’ lineup, she had taken Kashvee Gautam’s spot, who had been acquired for Rs 2 crore at the auction. In the previous WPL 2024 auction, Sayali was not successful in getting her base price of Rs 10 Lakh.

GG vs DC: The real events

The 23-year-old all-rounder who bowls seams stayed undefeated at 7 in Gujarat Giants’ 25-run loss against Delhi Capitals.

Throughout the innings, there were numerous examples of the GG’s fielders being careless, including Hemalatha losing a dolly and hurting herself. When fielding against the Delhi Capitals, the fielders lost numerous opportunities and dropped a lot of catches. Gujarat Giants held Delhi Capitals to 163 runs in spite of their subpar fielding.

But the DC bowlers maintained the team at the top all during the chase, so the hitters never really got going. Ashleigh Gardner’s valiant 40-run innings marked her as Gujarat’s lone warrior. She received no help from the other end, though, as they were 25 runs short of the goal. Gujarat lost for the fourth time in a row to end the season at the bottom of the standings without a victory. With their third straight victory of the season, the Delhi Capitals moved up to the top of the points standings.
