Authorities in the Patan district of Gujarat ordered an investigation after seven patients complained of having lost all or part of their vision following cataract surgery at one of the hospital’s locations. According to the hospital, the patients’ infections caused difficulties.

On February 2, 13 patients in all had surgeries at the Sarvodaya Eye Hospital in Radhanpur town.

Of the seven patients, two were sent to a hospital in Visnagar town in the Mehsana district, while five were transferred to the M and J Institute of Ophthalmology at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, according to trustee Bharti Vakharia of Sarvodaya Eye Hospital.

According to Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, the department of Health and Family Welfare has established a committee to carry out an investigation. “Those found guilty of any negligence will face severe consequences,” he said reporters in this location.

In the course of a month, there had been two instances of this kind in the state. On January 10, following cataract surgery at a trust-run hospital in Mandal village, Ahmedabad district, 17 elderly patients lost their vision as a result of infection. According to hospital trustee Vakharia, seven out of the thirteen patients in the Patan area who had cataract surgery returned three days later with infections in their eyes.

“Our operating theatre’s culture report was typical, demonstrating that we were not at fault. A group of government medical professionals came to our hospital and took samples for additional analysis,” she said.
