Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, has reportedly been banned from bowling in competitions organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This development comes after an independent assessment deemed his bowling action illegal.
According to a report, Shakib’s action was flagged after his one-off appearance for Surrey earlier this year. Following the game, match umpires reported concerns over his action, leading to testing at Loughborough University. The results revealed that Shakib’s bowling action exceeded the permitted 15-degree elbow extension threshold.
The suspension, effective from December 10, was issued after the ECB received confirmation from Loughborough University. For Shakib to resume bowling in ECB-organized events, he must undergo a reassessment to demonstrate compliance with bowling regulations.
It is unclear whether Shakib Al Hasan will seek to have his bowling action reassessed to regain eligibility for ECB competitions. His current suspension adds to a challenging period for the cricketer, whose tenure as a Member of Parliament with the Awami League Party was recently overturned. The ban has also prevented him from playing domestic cricket in Bangladesh, including his farewell Test match against South Africa.
