Legendary Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who announced his retirement from Test cricket last month, is likely to be included in the squad for Bangladesh’s upcoming farewell series against South Africa. According to a report by Cricbuzz, Shakib’s wish to play his final Test match in front of his home fans is gaining momentum, with strong support from Bangladesh’s Youth and Sports Advisor, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain.
Bhuyain expressed his eagerness to fulfill Shakib’s desire, stating, “He is a player who has contributed a lot to the country. Since he wishes to play his final Test match in Bangladesh, I personally hope he gets that opportunity.”
Shakib, who is also involved in politics, is currently under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in a murder case. However, Bhuyain assured that the government is committed to providing the highest level of security for Shakib during the series. “We will absolutely provide the highest level of security for our players,” Bhuyain said, adding that legal matters are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Law and will be dealt with separately.
Shakib had previously expressed concerns over his safety in Bangladesh during the second Test against India in Kanpur last month. Despite these concerns, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is working hard to bring Shakib back for the two-match Test series.
A BCB official revealed that Shakib Al Hasan is expected to confirm his participation in the farewell series within a few days. BCB president Faruque Ahmed, who initially stated that the board couldn’t guarantee Shakib’s security, has since reversed his position, indicating the board is ready to ensure his safety around the stadium premises. “I have had communication with Shakib, and he has a good chance to retire at home,” Faruque said after a board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Shakib’s farewell Test series is expected to be a memorable occasion for Bangladeshi cricket fans, as the country bids farewell to one of its greatest cricketers.
