Shubman Gill delivered a stellar performance in the second innings of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, smashing his fifth Test century on Day 3. After being dismissed for a duck in the first innings due to an unfortunate leg-side catch, Gill made a strong comeback, scoring an unbeaten 119 off 176 balls.
With this century, Gill became only the second Indian No. 3 batsman to score a Test century at this iconic venue, joining former captain and coach Rahul Dravid. Dravid, in his 35 Test appearances in Chennai, had been the only Indian No. 3 to achieve this feat until Gill’s knock on Saturday.
Gill reached his century in style with a single off Bangladesh off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, acknowledging the crowd with his signature bow. India declared their second innings at 285/4, setting Bangladesh a daunting target of 515 runs.
Considering Bangladesh’s first innings total of 149 all out and India’s strong bowling attack, it seems highly unlikely that Bangladesh will chase down this target, which would set a world record if achieved.
By the time this article was written, Bangladesh had lost 4 wickets for 158 runs while chasing the target of 515 runs.
