Sourav Ganguly has expressed his surprise at Rohit Sharma’s performance in Test cricket over the past four to five years, believing that the Indian skipper has not played to his full potential in the longest format of the game. Despite Rohit’s undeniable talent, his recent performances in red-ball cricket have not lived up to expectations.
Over the last five months, India has played ten Test matches against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, managing to secure victories in only three of them. Rohit’s form in red-ball cricket has particularly declined over the past four months, raising concerns as India prepares for a crucial five-Test series against England.
“What has surprised me is his form in red ball over the last 4-5 years. A player of his stature and ability, can do much better than what he has done. He must put on his thinking cap because we have 5 Tests against England and that’s going to be another hard series,” Sourav Ganguly said in an interview.
He further emphasized the challenges that lie ahead for India, drawing parallels to their tour of Australia. “Just like the way it was in Australia. It’s going to seam; it’s going to swing. India need him to perform in the red ball but in white ball, he is one of the greatest ever,” he added.
With the England series on the horizon, Ganguly’s words serve as both a warning and motivation for Rohit Sharma. As one of India’s most accomplished batsmen in limited-overs cricket, the expectation remains for him to translate his success into the Test arena and lead the team with impactful performances.
