Sri Lanka launches visa-free entry initiative to attract 2 million tourists from India, other countries

Sri Lanka has launched a pilot project to allow visa-free entrance for seven nations. The aim is to attract 2 million tourists in 2023.

As part of a Cabinet-approved pilot project. Sri Lanka has launched a visa-free entry program for tourists from seven countries, including India, China, and Russia. This decision of Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry was approved by the Cabinet.

The test phase of the project begins immediately and runs until March 31, 2024. The minister said, “Cabinet approves issuing of free visas to India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia & Thailand with immediate effect as a pilot project till 31 March.”

The Ministry of Tourism reported that a Cabinet Paper from a previous Cabinet meeting suggested giving free tourist visas to five countries’ tourists visiting Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s tourist industry wants 2 million visitors in 2023, up from 1.5 million.

The COVID-19 pandemic and economic and political issues in Sri Lanka hurt tourism, a major source of foreign cash. Despite these obstacles, the industry is determined to revive and grow.
