India’s legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has advised India’s captain Rohit Sharma to adopt a more cautious approach at the beginning of his innings when facing Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar believes that by holding back on big shots initially, Rohit can lay a solid foundation, especially in this high-stakes series where India must win to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
In a discussion on a sports channel, Gavaskar emphasized the need for Rohit to adjust his attacking instincts to mitigate early risks from Australia’s potent bowling lineup, particularly the experienced Mitchell Starc.
Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that Rohit’s initial foot movement in the first few overs often leaves him vulnerable to Starc’s precise lengths and lines. “What happens often with Rohit is that his foot doesn’t move as much as it should in the first few overs of the contest, because of which he gets into trouble,” Gavaskar explained. “But, if he can survive the first two-three overs, he can score runs.”
Gavaskar also suggested that Rohit should focus on selective shot-making to build a resilient innings, a strategy applicable to any top-order batter. By tempering his natural style and emphasizing footwork early on, Gavaskar believes Rohit can set the stage for India’s success in this crucial series.
