The Supreme Court of India, on Tuesday, imposed a temporary ban on YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, along with India’s Got Latent host Samay Raina and Apoorva Mukhija, restricting them from airing any show until further notice.
The decision was made while the court was hearing a plea filed by Ranveer Allahbadia, who sought to club multiple FIRs lodged against him in various states, including Maharashtra and Assam. The FIRs stemmed from his controversial remark about ‘parental sex,’ which he made during a guest appearance on comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube show.
Expressing its disapproval of Ranveer Allahbadia’s comments, the Supreme Court acknowledged the backlash it had sparked across social media platforms. However, the court granted him interim protection from arrest in connection with multiple FIRs that had been filed against him over the remarks.
Furthermore, the court ordered that no additional FIRs should be registered against Allahbadia for his statements made during the roast show. It also imposed travel restrictions on him, directing him to deposit his passport at Thane police station. As per the ruling, Allahbadia cannot travel abroad without prior approval from the court.
A two-judge bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Kotiswar Singh presided over the case. Representing Allahbadia was advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, son of former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.
The Supreme Court did not hold back in criticizing Allahbadia’s remarks, making its dissatisfaction clear while addressing his legal counsel. With the case still unfolding, the controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent has only intensified, leaving the fate of the show uncertain as legal proceedings continue.
