In a scathing remark, the Supreme Court on Monday took a firm stand against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, criticizing his crude jokes on Samay Raina’s India’s Got Latent show. The apex court made it clear that using explicit language to entertain an audience does not qualify as talent.

Despite the legal heat, Allahbadia secured some relief as the court extended the interim protection from arrest that was granted to him on February 18. This protection will remain in effect until further orders.

Allahbadia had approached the Supreme Court seeking relief from multiple FIRs filed against him across various states, including Assam and Mumbai, over his controversial remarks. He also requested the consolidation of these cases.

Expressing its concerns over digital content, the Supreme Court remarked, “We don’t want any regulatory regime which leads to censorship…but it can’t be a free-for-all. See the quality of humour he has… humour is something the entire family can enjoy, and nobody feels embarrassed. Using all filthy language is not talent.”

As the debate over online content intensifies, the court has urged the Centre to carefully evaluate the balance between morality and freedom of expression. This call for scrutiny comes in the wake of the growing controversy surrounding India’s Got Latent.
