Sushmita Sen, who is renowned for her daring demeanor on and off screen, has disclosed that she truly took matters into her own hands when she decided to resume acting after a lengthy hiatus. The former Miss Universe revealed in a recent interview with Mid Day how she contacted the executives of significant over-the-top (OTT) platforms, such as Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, to convey her wish to return to the workforce.
In a short clip from the interview shared by the publication, Sushmita recalled, “I called up the heads of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hotstar. And, I said, ‘My name is Sushmita Sen. I am an actor, I used to be one anyway. And, I want to come back and work. I have not worked for 8 years, and it has been a long time.”
Her portrayal of transgender activist Gauri Sawant in Taali (2023) was one of her most well-known recent roles. Although some commentators questioned whether a transgender actor should have been cast instead, she received overwhelming appreciation for the performance. Sushmita responded to the worry by stating that she was first apprehensive till she discovered that Sawant herself had expressly requested that she perform the role.
Looking back on her eight-year hiatus from acting, Sushmita claimed that taking a break provided her with the necessary perspective. She thinks it’s essential for any artist to watch and take part in life’s experiences.
In 2020, Sushmita Sen officially returned with her digital debut, Aarya, which Ram Madhvani helmed. She received praise for the series, which also signaled a significant change in her career. She had made cameos in F.A.L.T.U. and lighthearted movies like Dulha Mil Gaya and No Problem before Aarya. The 2015 Bengali film Nirbaak was her final significant release before her break.
