Tamil Nadu on Alert: Cyclone Michaung’s Arrival Brings Thunderstorm Warnings to 12 Districts

The Chennai Meteorological Centre has predicted moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu today as cyclone Michaung intensifies in the Bay of Bengal.The regional weather department also forecast light rain in another 11 districts of the state.

“Moderate thunderstorms and lightning with moderate rain are very likely at isolated places over Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Ramanathapuram, Thiruppur, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Thirunelveli Kanyakumari and Karaikal districts of Tamil Nadu,” the weather department said in a bulletin late on Friday night.

“Light rain is likely at isolated places over Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Nilgiris, Theni, and Puducherry in the next three hours,” it added.

The weather department also issued an advisory and mentioned the impacts of the weather forecast. Additionally, the weather service released an alert and discussed the implications of the weather prediction.

The impact of waterlogging, slick roads, traffic, and minor damage to loose and insecure structures in some regions were also included in the statement.

In the meantime, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a warning on Friday about the possibility of a cyclone over Tamil Nadu, indicating that the water will be rougher than usual in coastal regions.

Due to the cyclone effect, the sea has moved 100 metres backwards at Velankanni Beach in the Nagapattinam district, increasing the width of the coast. In several Tamil Nadu districts, there is heavy rain falling as the northeast monsoon gets stronger.

‘Cyclone warning cage-No-1’ has been raised by authorities in five ports, including Nagapattinam port. Chief Minister MK Stalin ordered all relevant officials to take precautions on Friday in response to the India Meteorological Department’s prediction of a cyclonic storm in Tamil Nadu. These precautions included evacuating people from areas that were likely to be affected by the cyclone.
