Tanvi Chowdhri quit her US job to build vegan ice cream business Papacream with 15 ‘desi’ flavors

Tanvi Chowdhri quit Wall Street, New York, to follow her dream of making ice cream. She in now selling 15 vegan, gluten-free and delectable flavours from her business, Papacream.

Tanvi Chowdhri, 33, is a Mumbai native who left behind a prestigious career as an investment banker on Wall Street New York to start from scratch and pursue her love for icecream.

Tanvi’s childhood was spent in Kolkata, in a family that loved to eat together. “Tanvi earned a mechanical engineering degree from a university in the US and then began working for a financial firm on Wall Street.”

But, her passion for eating had not dimmed with age and had accompanied her all the way to New York. As time went on, Tanvi realised she wanted to do something in the culinary arts.

Tanvi knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur and so she returned to India in 2015 to pursue her aspirations. Near the end of the year, Tanvi founded Papacream to provide clients with something new that gave them a world class experience. This included unusual flavours such as pani puri sorbet, nacho-cheese ice cream, ice cream sushi, and more.

Tanvi explains that at the time, the industry tendency was to use exotic French names for brands like hers, so she chose something that stood out while also providing a sense of comfort and familiarity. As a result, Papacream was born.

Tanvi utilised her money from her stay in New York to open an ice cream shop, and she later expanded into fast-moving consumer products (FMCG). We intended to expand and become pan-India.

“As a result, we began selling our ice cream in a packed manner,” she continues.

Tanvi believes in the concept of’made in India,’ and believes that customers deserve excellent ice creams on par with brands like London Dairy or Haagen Daaz, without the exorbitant prices.

Tanvi wants to show people that superior manufacturing can also be found in India. Today, Papacream offers roughly 15 gourmet ice cream flavours in a variety of categories such as vegan, decadent, gluten-free, and others.

Papacream also has sorbets and ice cream cakes on its menu. Vegan chocofudgy cake, vegan and standard raspberry sorbet, french vanilla, salted caramel, and other flavors are available. Papacream also sells ice cream cakes in vegan coffee chocolate, biscoff, vegan mango vanilla, and other flavors.

Tanvi says how every flavour brings you a memory. Cookies and cream seeks to reproduce the flavour of an entire cookie dipped in milk, rather than the simpler varieties available on the market. It’s the equivalent of a complete bowl of milk with cookies.

“There’s also the Ferro Crunch. The ice cream reminds us of our childhood’s spherical hazelnut chocolate, which was the first “premium” chocolate most of us got to taste.”

Tanvi has included all of the layers that one would expect to find in a typical bite: the chocolate coating, the thin wafer, the crunch of the hazelnut, and the gooey chocolate within.

During last year’s COVID-19 lockdown, Papacream teamed with film director Rhea Kapoor to launch four new flavours inspired by Kapoor’s own childhood experiences. The After School Sundae, Brown Butter Biskut, Hazelnut Cold Coffee, and Chocolate Influencer are among them.

Ice cream starts at Rs 375 and goes up from there, while cakes start at Rs 1,500 and go up from there. Papacream’s ice cream is accessible in 15 cities across India, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Dehradun, and others. They are also available both online and offline – at stores like Foodhall, on their website, or through platforms like Swiggy Instamart and Big Basket.

Tanvi Chowdhri claimed that Papacream’s revenue surged fivefold between November 2020 to November 2021.
