Google’s Latest Blow: Job Cuts Hit Waze Following Massive Layoffs

Google is firing Waze staff. Waze employment layoffs will result from the firm switching Waze to Google’s ad system.

In December, Google said that it would join Waze under its Geo division, which also houses well-known products like Google Maps and Google Earth. The actual number of positions lost at Waze was not made public by Google.

After the division started switching to using Google’s advertising technology, some positions at Waze that dealt with advertising were terminated.

Waze, a mapping firm owned by Alphabet Inc., has experienced employment cuts as part of Google’s latest effort to streamline its operations in the Silicon Valley.

Waze started using Google’s advertising technology, which resulted in the elimination of several advertising-related employees there, a Google representative stated on Tuesday.

As it moves forward with incorporating the component into its own map products, Google has started making job layoffs at its Waze mapping business. On Tuesday, Chris Phillips, the president of Google’s Geo mapping team, told staff members of the strategic change in Waze’s ad monetization. Layoffs in positions connected to Waze Ads monetization in sales, marketing, operations, and analytics will arise from the company’s plan to transfer Waze’s ad administration to the Global Business Organisation (GBO) and align it with Google Maps.

“We’ve started moving Waze’s current advertising system to Google Ads technology in order to provide Waze advertisers with a better, more seamless experience over time. We’ve reduced those responsibilities dedicated to Waze Ads monetization as part of this change, according to a statement from Google.

In response to the declining demand for digital advertising, which drives the company’s revenue, Google has been taking steps to cut costs. Alphabet announced in January that it would eliminate 12,000 positions, or more than 6% of its global workforce. On the strength of stronger-than-anticipated advertising sales for search and the YouTube video site, the business in April posted first-quarter sales that exceeded projections.
