A growing number of Indians believe that eating home-cooked food is enough to stay healthy. But doctors are now warning that this assumption may be dangerously misleading, especially when it comes to liver health.

Across urban India, cases of liver disease are rising rapidly, and alcohol is no longer the main reason. A large number of people who don’t drink are being diagnosed with fatty liver disease, a condition caused by lifestyle habits rather than alcohol. Studies suggest that nearly 38.9% of Indian adults may already have fatty liver, many without even knowing it.

The real issue lies in how lifestyles have changed. Even meals prepared at home are often high in oil, refined carbohydrates, and hidden sugars. Combined with sedentary routines, long working hours, stress, and poor sleep, these habits put continuous pressure on the liver.

Urban populations are especially affected. Research shows that fatty liver disease is more common in cities than in rural areas, sometimes even more widespread than diabetes in certain regions. Many office workers in their 20s to 40s are now being diagnosed, highlighting how early the problem can begin.

What makes this condition more dangerous is that it often shows no clear symptoms in the early stages. People may feel slightly tired or uncomfortable, but these signs are easy to ignore. Over time, however, fatty liver can progress to more serious conditions like inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer if left untreated.

Experts say the root cause is not just diet alone but a combination of factors like obesity, diabetes, and metabolic imbalance. In fact, even people who appear slim can develop fatty liver due to internal fat accumulation and poor lifestyle habits.

The takeaway is simple but important. Eating at home is not enough if the overall lifestyle is unhealthy. Regular exercise, balanced meals, proper sleep, and routine health checks are now essential. Liver disease in India is no longer a distant risk, it is becoming a silent epidemic hiding in everyday habits.
