Legendary wicketkeeper-batter Mahendra Singh Dhoni has mentored many young cricketers during his time with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Known for his valuable insights and calm leadership, Dhoni formed strong bonds with his younger teammates, helping them improve their game. Despite stepping down as CSK captain last season, Dhoni remains a guiding figure for the team.
CSK pacer Tushar Deshpande, who made his India debut recently during the Zimbabwe tour, shared how Dhoni predicted his success at the international level. During the preparatory camp ahead of the 2023 season, Dhoni had a conversation with Deshpande, expressing confidence in the pacer’s future on the big stage.
During an interview, Tushar Deshpande stated that MSD told him, “You have everything to succeed at international level. But you have to be calm during your run-up. Don’t get distracted by the crowd. Just take a deep breath, stay calm and bowl. If Mahi tells you that you have everything to be successful at international level, boss, that itself is an achievement.”
Deshpande joined CSK in 2022 but didn’t get many opportunities in his first season at Chepauk. However, after consistent performances in domestic cricket, he made a strong comeback, becoming an essential part of CSK’s bowling attack. Over the last two seasons, the right-arm pacer claimed 21 and 17 wickets, respectively. While he was occasionally expensive, his ability to take crucial wickets helped him stay on the radar of the Indian selectors.
