Tragedy in the Skies: Air India Pilot’s Cardiac Arrest Shakes Delhi Airport, Airline Grieves

At the Delhi airport, a 37-year-old Air India pilot experienced a heart attack, which proved fatal. Following the event, the aviation regulatory agency rejected any connection between duty-related weariness and fatigue.

India Today was informed by high-ranking officials at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that Captain Himanil Kumar completed his medical examination on August 23 and was deemed fit. His health insurance was good till August 2024.

An Air India pilot passed away tragically on Thursday at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi following a heart attack. In a statement, Air India expressed its sorrow over the deaths. “We are very grieved by our comrade Captain Himmanil Kumar’s demise today. Senior Commander Captain Kumar stopped by our operations office at T3 Delhi Airport as part of a regular routine, according to Air India, as reported.

He was a senior commander with Air India and was training at Delhi Airport to switch from Airbus to B777. According to the airline, as soon as he began exhibiting symptoms of pain, his coworkers made an effort to assist him. Despite their haste to the hospital, the physicians were unable to rescue him, and it continued.

We express our sorrow over our colleague Capt. Himmanil Kumar’s demise today. As part of usual business, Capt. Kumar, a senior commander, stopped by our Operations office at T3 Delhi Airport. When he abruptly displayed symptoms of pain at work, his coworkers helped him right away.

He was subsequently taken to a hospital on the airport grounds, where, despite the best efforts of the attending physicians, he died, according to a statement from Air India.  In addition, the pilot was “undergoing conversion training to operate wide-body aircraft, and was not on active flying duty,” according to the business.

Major Indian airline pilots have recently expressed worries about being overworked and stressed. They ascribe these difficulties to rigorous scheduling procedures, such as working back-to-back night shifts and being assigned flights that require them to spend a lot of time away from their home base.

As required by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms, reports claim that the pilot slept well before taking off. Initial reports state that “sudden cardiac arrest” was the cause of the pilot’s death, according to KIMS-Kingsway Hospital, as reported by a news report.

The airline also said that Captain Himmanil Kumar suddenly became uncomfortable at work and that his coworkers helped him out right away. After that, he was taken to the airport’s hospital, where he later died.
