Need to Know Before Visiting Japan

Are you planning to travel to Japan? From ancient history to modern cities and mouth-watering food, Japan offers a rich cultural experience. However, there are some essential tips every traveler should know to make their journey to Japan unforgettable.

  • Visa & Documentation

Indian Nationals require a visa for tourism purposes. The application can be submitted through the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC). Your passport should be valid for a minimum of six months, and you will need to provide an itinerary, hotel bookings, and financial proof documents.

  • Best Time to Visit

The best times to visit Japan are during the spring season (March to May) and the autumn season (September to November). Spring, especially from the end of April to early May, is famous for its cherry blossoms, while autumn is known for its vibrant colors. It is best to steer clear from June and August due to the heavy rain and peak summer season.

  • Currency and Payments

The currency of Japan is Yen (¥). Japan still operates primarily through cash. However, credit cards are accepted in most cities. If you are traveling outside the city, make sure to carry some money, as 7-Eleven ATMs and convenience stores have a reliable supply.

  • Language Barrier

Spoken English is rarely used in more remote parts of the country. For help, be sure to use translation apps like Google Translate and download offline maps in advance. Knowing a couple of words in Japanese, for instance, “Arigatou” (thank you) or “Sumimasen” (excuse me), can be beneficial.

  • Transport & Etiquette

Japan is among the world’s best countries in terms of transportation. Get your Japan Rail Pass for long-distance travel. As a rule, keep to the left-hand side of the escalators (except in Osaka), be quiet during the journey, and refrain from eating while standing.

  • Cultural Norms

These days, no matter what part of Japan you visit, showing respect is one of the most important things. People greet with bows, and you leave your shoes at the door when entering a house or traditional lodgings. Moreover, Japan does not encourage tipping.

Japan is a country where you can travel to temples in Kyoto and, later in the day, visit the buzzing streets of Tokyo or admire the peaceful view of Mount Fuji, so make sure you plan your itinerary ahead of time.
