In Mumbai, it is against the law to ride a two-wheeler without a helmet, and police frequently inform citizens about the safety that helmets offer. But, a Twitter user posted a picture of two police officers using a scooter without wearing helmets.
If they are discovered to be riding without helmets, the police punish the driver and the pillion rider Rs 500 apiece. Driving privileges may be suspended for three months after a series of offences.
The Mumbai traffic police responded to the user’s post by asking him to disclose the name of the street where the photo was taken. A senior member of the Matunga traffic division has been informed by police after an update so that the required harsh steps may be taken.
Several readers noted that because the police officer’s scooter’s licence plate was visible in the picture, the traffic police may issue an e-challan right away.
