Legendary playback singer Udit Narayan is facing serious trouble. His first wife, Ranjana Narayan Jha, has filed a criminal complaint against him, his two brothers, and second wife Deepa Narayan at the Women’s Police Station in Bihar’s Supaul district on February 10. The Udit Narayan first wife allegations include claims of a criminal conspiracy that she says led to her uterus being removed without consent back in 1996.

Ranjana claims she discovered the surgery years after it happened, during a routine medical check-up. The complaint has sent shockwaves through the industry, raising questions about the singer’s personal life that he’s kept largely private for decades.

The Marriage That Udit Narayan Never Acknowledged

According to Ranjana’s complaint, she married Udit Narayan on December 7, 1984, in a traditional Hindu ceremony. A year later, he left for Mumbai to chase his dreams in the music industry. While Udit’s career soared with hits that defined Bollywood’s golden era, Ranjana says she was left behind in Bihar.

She claims she learned about his marriage to Deepa Narayan through media reports. Every time she confronted him, he allegedly misled her with false promises. “Udit Narayan ji repeatedly makes promises but does not fulfil them,” she told reporters outside the police station. “He has not done anything till now, which is why I have come here. I deserve justice.”

The most disturbing allegation in her complaint dates back to 1996. Ranjana says she was taken to a Delhi hospital under the pretext of medical treatment. There, her uterus was allegedly removed without her knowledge or permission. She claims Udit, his brothers Sanjay Kumar Jha and Lalit Narayan Jha, and Deepa were all present during the incident.

Is Udit Narayan’s Second Marriage Illegal?

Here’s where things get legally complicated. Human rights groups have jumped into the fray. Advocate S.K. Jha has filed petitions with both the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC), arguing that Udit’s marriage to Deepa Narayan violates the Hindu Marriage Act.

The argument? If Ranjana’s claims are true and Udit never divorced his first wife, his second marriage would be illegal under Indian law. The Hindu Marriage Act clearly prohibits bigamy, making a second marriage void if the first one hasn’t been legally dissolved.

Udit has dismissed these allegations entirely, calling them an attempt to extract money. But the legal wheels are turning. The singer appeared before the Supaul Family Court on February 21, 2025, for a maintenance case Ranjana filed earlier. He was supposed to show up on January 28 but missed it, earning himself a ₹10 fine.

During the hearing, the court tried mediating between the estranged couple. Udit refused. He made it clear he wouldn’t take her back.

Years of Alleged Abuse and Abandonment

Ranjana’s grievances go beyond the medical allegations. She claims Udit has kept ₹18 lakh from the sale of a property in Nepal that rightfully belongs to her. When she visited Mumbai in 2006 to meet him, she says she was abused and denied entry to his home by both Udit and Deepa.

She tried going to his family home in Nepal. Same story. “I was insulted and shooed away,” she alleges.

Now in poor health and old age, Ranjana says people hired by Udit follow and intimidate her whenever she travels to Mumbai. Her lawyer, Ajay Kumar, told reporters she simply wants to live with her husband. “She is fighting only for her rightful status and dignity,” he said.

But Udit isn’t budging. He’s chosen to contest the case rather than settle.

Where the Investigation Stands

Women’s Police Station in-charge Anju Tiwari confirmed to NDTV that a complaint has been filed. The allegations date back almost 30 years, she noted. The matter is under investigation, and an FIR will be registered once facts are verified.

Udit Narayan hasn’t issued a public statement about the latest allegations. His silence is loud, especially given the severity of the claims. The singer, whose voice has brought joy to millions, now finds his personal life under intense scrutiny.

The Legal Battle Ahead

This case raises uncomfortable questions about power dynamics, consent, and accountability. Can a celebrity simply walk away from a marriage without legal closure? What happens when someone alleges a medical procedure was performed without consent decades ago?

Ranjana says she’s not after money—she wants recognition as Udit’s wife and a place in his life as she battles health issues. Whether the courts will side with her remains to be seen. For now, the investigation continues, and India watches as one of its most beloved voices faces allegations that could rewrite his legacy.
