Thousands of Palestinians have fled northern Gaza, calling it hell. Israel’s soldiers advanced into dense urban neighborhoods to fight Hamas fighters. The besieged enclave’s officials reported over 11,000 Palestinian deaths. Combat in Gaza makes the search for safety more desperate. Residents who fled to the south and Palestinian health officials reported overnight strikes on Gaza City’s main hospital. Israel claimed one was a Palestinian rocket misfire.

The World Health Organization announced Friday that 20 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are closed, including a pediatric facility that closed after an Israeli strike. “If there is a hell on earth today, its name is northern Gaza,” UN humanitarian agency spokeswoman Jens Laerke told Geneva reporters.
More than two-thirds of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have fled since the war began. As the battle enters its second month, southerners are packed into shelters with depleting food and water.

Israel is trying to destroy Hamas in Gaza City, the territory’s main city, after the Islamist group’s Oct. 7 invasion into southern Israel that started the war.

Palestinian militants took 240 Israeli hostages into Gaza and killed around 1,200 Israelis, mostly in the Hamas attack.

Since Hamas’ incursion into Israel on October 7, the WHO has documented over 250 attacks on Gazan hospitals, clinics, patients, and ambulances and 25 on Israeli health services.
Fire outside al-Shifa and Rantisi hospitals: WHO chief

In Gaza, the “health system is on its knees” and the situation “is impossible to describe,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting.

He added Palestinian health personnel were continuing rescuing lives despite being “directly in the firing line.” “As we speak, there are reports of firing outside the al-Shifa and Rantisi hospitals.”

Ghebreyesus said five Gazan hospitals were attacked in one day last week, and four hospitals with 430 beds were closed in the preceding 48 hours. Half of the Gaza Strip’s 36 hospitals and two-thirds of its primary health care centers are closed, while those that are operation “are operating way beyond their capacities.”

Conclusion

Gaza is experiencing enormous humanitarian disaster. Over 11,000 Palestinians have died in Israel-Hamas combat. The destruction in northern Gaza has forced thousands to evacuate for safety.

Gaza’s populace is in serious need of healthcare since 20 of 36 facilities have closed. Over 250 verifiable attacks on Gazan hospitals have been reported by the WHO, worsening the situation. Gaza’s health system is on its knees, but brave health professionals save lives in the line of fire.

As more than two-thirds of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents squeeze into shelters with scarce food and water, the scenario becomes increasingly complicated. Israeli attacks in Gaza City have worsened civilian misery.

In this situation, supporting Palestine is both geopolitical and humanitarian. The extensive destruction, death, and weakening of key services require worldwide intervention.

Humanitarian aid, diplomacy, and a commitment to peace are needed to alleviate Palestinian suffering and end this conflict. The international community must work toward a durable and just resolution that addresses the conflict’s core causes and protects the people of Palestine.
