Virat Kohli, widely regarded as one of India’s most exceptional Test cricketers, quietly announced his retirement from the format he cherished most, earlier this year in May, via a brief social media post. This news came as a surprise, given that the former captain had never hinted at even considering leaving red-ball cricket. He offered no specific reasons at the time, nor did he address the topic again until Tuesday, July 8th, during an event in London.
The occasion was a gala dinner hosted by India legend Yuvraj Singh for his YouWeCan Foundation, an event attended by numerous current and former cricket stars from across the globe. Among the distinguished guests was Kohli, a former teammate of Yuvraj’s, and it was at this gathering that he chose to break his silence regarding his shocking retirement. Kohli succinctly explained his decision, stating, “I just coloured my beard two days ago. You know it’s time when you are colouring your beard every four days.”
The 36-year-old boasts a stellar Test career, having accumulated an impressive 9230 runs at an average of 46.85 from 210 innings across 123 Tests. These runs were embellished with 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. Furthermore, Virat Kohli’s leadership in 68 Tests resulted in 40 victories, solidifying his position as the most successful Indian captain in the format’s history. His remarkable win percentage of 58.82 ranks as the third-best in history among captains who have led in at least 50 Tests.
King Kohli will always be missed on the cricket ground.
