Eighth Triumph for India: Asian Kabaddi Championship 2023 Final Sees India Defeat Iran

In the 2023 Asian Kabaddi Championship final on Friday at the Dong-Eui Institute of Technology Seokdang Cultural Centre in Busan, Republic of Korea, and India put up an incredible performance to defeat Iran 42-32.

In the fourth game of the Asian Kabaddi Championship, Team India played Iran, which was a dangerous opponent. India won with a score of 33-28 despite a fierce struggle between the two sides. India has now won the competition four times in a row, sealing its position in the championship game. On the other hand, it represents Iran’s first defeat in the championship. Iran had a perfect record prior to this match, but they were unable to overcome India’s opposition.

In nine editions, this was India’s eighth victory. With a fantastic 10, Indian captain Pawan Sehrawat took the initiative. The Indian men’s kabaddi team trailed Iran in the first five minutes of the game. However, Iran was obliged to go all-out in the 10th minute of play following a few tackle points by the defence and productive raids by Pawan Sehrawat and Aslam Inamdar.

The Indian kabaddi team quickly strengthened their lead as they gained momentum and put up an outstanding overall performance. Iran defeated the defending champions India with a few simple bonus points, but in the 19th minute India inflicted a second all-out on Iran.

India led by a score of 23-11 going into the break. The Iranian team’s captain, Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh, helped India suffer its first all-out in the 29th minute with a two-point raid and a super raid.

The game became tense as Iran reduced the deficit to 38-31 with two minutes left, but India hung on to eke out a 42-32 triumph.

India had thrashed Hong Kong 64-20 earlier in the day to finish the league stage of the competition unbeaten.

In the second half, the Indian team made multiple defensive errors that Iran took advantage of, bringing the game to a crucial juncture where India was on the verge of an All-Out. The squad avoided an All-Out when Captain Pawan Sehrawat secured a key raid point with just two players left on the mat. However, the Indian team was finally defeated by an All-Out in the 34th minute, resulting in a 26-22 final score. India only had a two-point lead in the waning minutes, but Nitesh Kumar’s pivotal Super Tackle sealed the victory.

The  World Health Organization (WHO) may label aspartame, a sweetener used in Diet Coke and other popular goods, a probable cancer risk.

According to a news outlet, the International outlet for Research on Cancer (IARC) will label the popular sweetener as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” in July.

The move is anticipated to pit the world’s premier health agency against the food industry and regulators, and the sector has already criticized it.

The IARC’s external experts convened earlier this month to decide if anything is a possible danger based on all available information.

It ignores safe product consumption. JECFA, a WHO food additive expert body, and country regulators advise on this.

However, comparable IARC verdicts for other drugs have aroused consumer concerns, led to litigation, and forced producers to rewrite formulations and switch to alternatives. Critics say the IARC’s evaluations are unclear.

IARC rulings have been criticized for alarming people about hard-to-avoid drugs or circumstances. It previously classified working overnight, eating red meat, and using mobile phones as “probably cancer-causing”.

“IARC is not a food safety body and their review of aspartame is not scientifically comprehensive and is based heavily on widely discredited research,” said ISA secretary general Frances Hunt-Wood.

Mars Wrigley, Coca-Cola, and Cargill are among the body’s members.

Kate Loatman, executive director of the International Council of Beverages Associations, said the “leaked opinion” should “deeply concern” public health authorities and “could needlessly mislead consumers into consuming more sugar rather than choosing safe no- and low-sugar options.”

This year, JECFA, the WHO additives committee, is examining aspartame use. It began meeting at the end of June and will release its conclusions on July 14, the same day as the IARC.

JECFA has declared aspartame safe within daily limits since 1981. US and European regulators agree with it.

IARC’s determination was “the first fundamental step to understand carcinogenicity,” according to an IARC representative.

Years of research have examined aspartame. Last year, a 100,000-person French observational research found that persons who used more artificial sweeteners like aspartame had a slightly greater cancer risk.

In the early 2000s, the Ramazzini Institute in Italy connected aspartame to various malignancies in mice and rats.

However, the first research could not verify that aspartame caused the increased cancer risk, and EFSA, which reviewed the second study, questioned its methodology.

Global regulators have approved aspartame for use after reviewing all the facts, and major food and beverage companies have defended its usage for decades. In June, IARC reviewed 1,300 papers.

Pepsico’s formula changes show the industry’s effort to balance flavor and health. In 2015, Pepsico withdrew aspartame from drinks, only to reinstate it in 2020.

According to IARC sources, listing aspartame as a potential carcinogen would encourage greater study to assist agencies, consumers, and producers make better decisions.

World Bank approves $1.5 billion to support India’s low-carbon transition

The World Bank has granted approval for USD 1.5 billion to advance India’s low-carbon energy infrastructure. The World Bank said Friday (June 30) that the money will help India scale up renewable energy and create green hydrogen, among other things.

As one of the fastest-growing global economies, India’s energy consumption is predicted to rise substantially. India consumes one-third of the world energy average per person. India wants net zero by 2070.

India has increased renewable energy capacity and reduced prices. “Scaling up renewable energy production will accelerate the transition to low-carbon electricity and support the emergence and expansion of the green hydrogen sector,” the World Bank stated.

World Bank expressed support for India’s green hydrogen development. Renewable energy electrolyzes water to generate low-carbon hydrogen energy. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, authorized in early January, aims to make India a global centre for producing, using, and exporting such technology. The mission’s original budget is Rs 19,744 crore, including R&D.

Green hydrogen will decarbonize industrial, transport, and energy sectors.The government wants to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen and add 125 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity.

“The program will support the successful implementation of the National Green Hydrogen Mission that aims to stimulate $100 billion in private sector investment by 2030,” stated Auguste Tano Kouame, World Bank Country Director for India.

“The World Bank remains committed to supporting India’s low-carbon transition by complementing public financing and enabling private sector investments.”

The investment will assist initiatives for a national carbon market, which is needed to level the playing field between low-carbon energy and fossil fuels.

At the 2021 COP26 meeting in Glasgow, India made a five-part “Panchamrit” vow to attain 500 GW of non-fossil electrical capacity, produce half of its energy from renewables, and decrease emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030.India wants to cut GDP emissions by 45%.

 India aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

A Chinese guy purchased a first-class ticket and rebooked it 300 times in order to receive complimentary meals in a VIP club at a Chinese airport.
The regular eater bought a first-class, fully refundable ticket on Eastern China Airlines, then repeatedly rebooked it to receive complimentary meals.
According to a story in the Chinese-language daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh in Malaysia, he used the ticket to obtain entry to the VIP lounge at the Xi’an International Airport, where wealthy travelers can eat for free.
Before leaving, the man showed the lounge workers at the airport in Shaanxi province his ticket, ate a meal like any first-class passenger, and then decided to modify the departure date of his aircraft rather than board it. He would arrive the next day with a freshly printed ticket for the new date, dine, and then modify his ticket once more. He repeated this several times.

Officials from Eastern China Airlines just recently discovered the man’s plot after observing his single ticket being rebooked 300 times over the course of a year. Officials from the airline acknowledged that they had no control on the frequent diner. The freeloader ultimately cashed in his fully refundable ticket and received his entire purchase price back.
