SEPAL gets Rs 50 lakh from Shark Tank India for world’s first motorbike canopy

SEPAL, a truly Made-in-India product, secured Rs 50 lakh in funding in the second season of the popular business reality show Shark Tank India. The company accepted the offer of Lenskart’s Peyush Bansal for 2 per cent equity.

SEPAL, a true Made-in-India product, is the world’s first motorcycle canopy, shielding thousands of bike riders from the sun, rain, cold, and pollution.

SEPAL, an officially recognised Indian start-up founded by two IITian brothers, has received Rs 50 lakh in investment in the second season of the renowned business reality programme Shark Tank India. The firm accepted Peyush Bansal of Lenskart’s offer of 2% stock. The firm indicated that the monies generated will be used to expand their enormous production for large masses across the country.

SEPAL appears to have sparked a debate amongst supporters and detractors over whether it makes sense to have a big windscreen and canopy on your motorcycle. Even the sharks themselves appear to be split over SEPAL. With Peyush Bansal on one side pulling for the bigger picture of what SEPAL could achieve if done well, and the rest of the sharks still unsure whether an ordinary man would dare spend a few thousand dollars for taking care of himself and his family while riding a motorcycle.

People can’t seem to ignore it, whether they hate it or love it, which is why the SEPAL team wound up on Shark Tank, according to Kashyap Addepally, co-founder of SEPAL. “We hadn’t contemplated coming to Shark Tank until people started bombarding us with messages, some cynically to be roasted by the sharks, and others who were sincerely pulling for SEPAL.”

Whether or not SEPAL is a lifesaver for the majority of two-wheeler riders, it is a reality that in India, one in every three adults relies on a two-wheeler for a living and daily requirements. Nobody can dispute the difficulties they confront on a daily basis.

Windblasts, which are uncomfortable and freezing in the winter and tiring and dehydrating in the summer, are some of the most serious problems that a two-wheeler rider faces. And what about city pollution? Nowadays, city pollution (with all of its construction sites, garbage trucks, and diesel cars) is known for making bike riders disoriented after a long journey.

Interestingly enough, in the words of Vidhey Addepally, co-founder of SEPAL,”we at SEPAL have set out to equip all the two-wheeler riders with not just the physical pleasures of a vehicle but with all the entertainment capabilities present in EVs as well”.

This prompted Peyush to investigate SEPAL’s IoT module and App capability, which is so impressive that it can transform an old Hero Honda bike into a Smart Vehicle on par with Ola and Ather. That is a serious combination of Hardware and Software for a start-up to come up with, along with the massive size of the two-wheeler market in India and abroad, which must have convinced both Vidhey to drop out of his Stanford admission and Kashyap to abandon his thriving Design Practice to build for 21st century India.

Whether or not the Sharks were pleased by SEPAL, Peyush appears to believe that SEPAL represents a potential to develop a completely new sector rather than simply entering an existing one.

Is Peyush’s gamble to back SEPAL a good one? Only the market will be able to tell.

For the time being, something appears to be working in SEPAL’s favour, as it has been an online phenomenon since its inception in February 2022, and people from all walks of life appear to be using SEPAL.

Parents use it to transport their children to school, while other IT personnel, students, marketers, and salesmen use it for their everyday journeys.

SEPAL is also gaining popular among bike riding groups since it is extremely beneficial on extended journeys. SEPAL is interestingly utilised in 25 Indian states and sold to various overseas places.

The film sparked outrage for purportedly denigrating Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and praising his killer Nathuram Godse. During a film promotion event, AR Rahman stated that people had lost trust in filmmakers and referred to Rajkumar Santoshi as a “victim” of the circumstance.

AR Rahman stated, “They haven’t watched the movie, so they presume the trailer is biased… People have lost faith in filmmakers because they take sides. Unfortunately… As a result, he (Santoshi) is the victim.”

Rajkumar Santoshi recently requested greater protection for himself and his family in a letter to Mumbai Police. He claimed he got threats from unknown individuals requesting that he suspend the film’s distribution and promotional efforts.

The director stated that he is not frightened of anything. “Both Godse and Gandhi were bold people,” he continued. “How can I be worried when I’m filming a film about these two bold people? I don’t worry about death threats, but my family and friends recommended that I take safeguards since it is a genuine threat. As a result, I asked Mumbai Police protection, which they gave. I am grateful to them.”

He also mentioned not paying attention to social media boycott trends, citing Shah Rukh Khan’s recently released film Pathaan, which did extremely well on its opening day despite criticism surrounding its song Besharam Rang.

Gandhi Godse will compete with Pathaan at the box office when it opens on Thursday.

Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh is set in early post-independence India in 1947-48, in an alternate version of Indian history in which Mahatma Gandhi survives Nathuram Godse’s murder attempt.  It recounts an interesting conversation between Gandhi and Godse in a jail.

What BharatPe co-founders have planned for the future

0

BharatPe is an app that lets people log in to websites and other platforms using WhatsApp, more secure than logging in via emails or one-time passwords sent over text messages.

Tanmay Sagar, co-founder of BharatPe, left the firm with an idea: allow people to enter into websites and other platforms using WhatsApp, which is more secure than signing in via emails or one-time passwords transmitted over text messages.

That was in May 2021, long before Bhavik Koladiya, the company’s original founder and first CEO, resigned in August of last year.

Tanmay began working on the new company concept in secret mode alongside Bhavik and another BharatPe partner, Satyam Nathani. Sagar Satija, Manas Poddar, and Chirag Bhadiyadra, three additional former top BharatPe colleagues, have also joined them at OTPless. Six of the startup’s ten members are now former BharatPe senior executives.

Bhavik, who is now involved in a court battle with ex-BharatPe CEO Ashneer Grover to retrieve his shares, provided the first funding through his venture capital business Finix Partners, which was founded in May of last year.

“We jugaadus are back at it,” Bhavik says from his new office in Surat, Gujarat, using a colloquial Hindi term for those who solve problems in unconventional ways.

OTPless, based in Delhi and founded in December 2021, officially released its product in October.

According to Bhavik, it has signed up 2,000 clients, including BharatPe, PostPe, Freo, CityMall, EasyEats, GameZop, Capri Global, and Park+, and has completed over 7 million authentication requests. According to him, the startup’s pipeline includes significant financial institutions, public sector units, and unicorn businesses.

OPTless is following in the footsteps of Auth0, which revolutionised email-based login and was purchased by competitor Octa in 2021 for around $6.5 billion.

The WhatsApp path makes sense given the platform’s 2 billion worldwide users, roughly one-fourth of whom that are in India.

For the time being, OTPless is focusing on developing a solution for small and medium-sized businesses in India, many of whom are more likely to use WhatsApp than email on their phones.

Bhavik also stated that the firm had received its first external financing, a $2.7 million seed round. He refused to provide any other information.

During a dinner chat, the concept for the WhatsApp-based authentication and login mechanism arose. Tanmay came up with the idea after struggling to obtain an OTP message to connect onto a website.

The three met while studying at IIT-Delhi. Tanmay, together with Ashneer, controlled the financial side of BharatPe while Satyam and Bhavik handled product and technology.

Login authorizations by email and OTP are becoming increasingly vulnerable to phishing attempts. Furthermore, while OTPs on phone numbers were added to give an extra layer of protection for the login and verification procedure, retailers must pay about 17 paise every text message.

To authenticate a user’s identity, WhatsApp employs a variety of criteria such as phone numbers, device information, and location data. The procedure does not save any data.

OTPless, which is still in its early stages, operates on a freemium basis and pays a little charge to WhatsApp for each authorization. It intends to charge clients a monthly fee for value-added services in the future.

The startup’s current focus is on developing the product and its distribution channel, as well as bringing on new merchants.

The next step would be to provide a ‘login with Telegram’ option in India and iMessages in the US.

The squad is still under the influence of BharatPe, as evidenced by the recent dispute involving Ashneer and Bhavik. Even before that, Bhavik had to resign as CEO and from the BharatPe board when allegations arose about his conviction in a credit card fraud case in the United States.

Rahul Dravid says Indian cricket team doesn’t have any specialist wicketkeeper after MS Dhoni

0

The practice of having a specialist wicketkeeper has got over after MS Dhoni got retired. When Rahul Dravid is asked whether the Indian team management is looking for a wicketkeeping specialist for the World Cup, he says that there is no doubt they are looking for such a person.

Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, must be overjoyed as India has swept the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, defeating the hosts by 90 runs in the last ODI in Indore which was held at Holkar Stadium.

Rahul Dravid spoke with the media before of the third ODI, and he was asked some harsh questions about India’s preparations for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

When asked if the Indian team management is searching for a wicketkeeper like Rahul Dravid for the ODI World Cup, Rahul Dravid responds that there is no question they are looking for a wicketkeeper-batter and that the practise of having a specialised wicketkeeper has ended since MS Dhoni resigned.

The Ex-Indian cricketer believes that the young players in contention, whether it is Ishan Kishan or KS Bharat, are both strong batters who have demonstrated their skill in the Vijay Hazare Trophy; however, at the international level, KS Bharat has not played but Ishan Kishan has batted effectively.

A concern is also raised over who would replace Rishabh Pant, who will be out for about a year due to an injury.

In response, Rahul Dravid adds that while Pant is injured, they still have Rahul, Sanju Samson, and other wicketkeeper-batsmen.

He goes on to say that in today’s wicketkeeper-batsman age, a wicketkeeper should be able to contribute with the bat as well and they chose Jitesh Sharma for the T20Is because of his abilities to keep and bat.

According to Rahul Dravid, Jitesh Sharma is capable of scoring runs quickly, and he has demonstrated this skill in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the IPL.

The Indian team crushed the Kiwis in the third ODI as well, scoring 385/9 in 50 overs after batting first, however the Kiwis lost by 90 runs after being dismissed for 295 in roughly 42 overs.

India and New Zealand will now play a three-match T20I series beginning on January 27, 2023, with the first match taking place at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Know how Suheil Tandon’s Pro Sport Development transformed gender stereotypes

0

Suheil Tandon is the founder of Pro Sport Development (PSD) which works across 15 states in India and has reached out to 11,412 young people.

Suheil Tandon founded Pro Sport Development (PSD) in 2013 with the goal of assisting talented poor and marginalised youngsters in pursuing greatness in sports. The major issue in India is a lack of sporting resources, not a lack of talent.

PSD sought to assist fill that need and nurture the next generation of superstar athletes. Tandon, on the other hand, was taken aback by an incidence at the commencement of their first job.

A young female weightlifter, 15, did not return to school following the summer break.

When PSD inquired about her, they learned that her family had planned her wedding over the vacation. Her potential weightlifting career was unimportant to the girl’s family.

Tandon modified the curriculum in the short term to emphasise the broader advantages of athletics, but PSD was still aimed around developing medal winners. It was a success by that metric, with the competitors winning over 25 medals on the national stage.

Tandon realised, however, that focusing just on athletic accomplishment would not solve the greater societal hurdles to participation in sports in India, particularly for ladies. As a result, PSD’s mandate was formally broadened in 2015.

“At this time, we made a deliberate and strategic choice to shift our vision and go forward by utilising athletics as a vehicle for the complete development of young people,” Tandon explains.

In other words, via the development of an inclusive and sustainable athletic culture, the organisation would attempt to enhance a young person’s full human potential.

Tandon had always been interested in sports, having participated in and watched a variety of them as a child, but it wasn’t until he was in college, studying mathematics and economics, that he realised a career in sports was a possible possibility. That’s where his passion in developing athletes at the grassroots level began, leading to the formation of PSD with the help of family and friends.

PSD now operates in 15 Indian states and has reached out to 11,412 young people, 51% of them are girls. It has two main teams, one in Delhi and one in Bhubaneshwar.

Schoolchildren are given access to organised physical exercise and sports-based programming through its programmes, which helps them develop soft skills such as teamwork and leadership.

PSD has also set a more ambitious objective of transforming the country’s perception of sports. The results of their efforts may be observed in the personality development of youngsters like Shibani Pradhan, whose father owns his own auto rickshaw.

Pradhan was 11 years old when she enrolled in the PSD programme in Bhubaneswar. Pradhan, now 14, a class 10 student at Saraswati Sishu Vidhya Mandir, used to enjoy games with her classmates but had little knowledge of organised sports. She now really likes playing cricket and badminton.

She describes participating in PSD’s programmes as “a lot of fun,” and she has learnt what is needed of a team member in athletics as well as leadership.

Off the field, there have been significant advantages. PSD’s activities are centred on the Community Sports Program (CSP), which has touched over 3,000 youngsters in Bhubaneshwar.

The CSP also includes the training of community trainers and instructors, ensuring that the programme is local, sustainable, and inclusive. During the shutdown, PSD was forced to adopt an online approach that featured live workshops for anyone with internet access.

Srabani Patra, a class 10 student of Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir in Bhubaneshwar, was among them. Patra learnt about gender stereotypes through CSP in 2021, notably in the family, where parents treat boys and daughters differently. Patra gained the courage to debate gender standards with her father, Krushna Chandra Patra, and as a result, her entire family has begun to challenge current gender conventions in their society.

PSD aims to inspire this type of change across the country as the organisation expands. It’s also how the organisation analyses programme performance after changing its purpose in 2015.

According to Tandon, the agency employs “quantitative and qualitative data gathering methodologies to analyse the outcomes and effect of the projects”.

Participants complete surveys at the beginning and conclusion of programmes to assess personal progress. PSD also conducts interviews with trainers, peers, instructors, and parents to assess the nature and scope of any changes.
