After making her film debut opposite Mithun Chakraborty in Ramesh Sippy’s Bhrashtachar, actor Shilpa Shirodkar went on to star in several successful movies, including Hum, Khuda Gawah, and Aankhen. Even though Shilpa was well-known in the Hindi film industry, she chose to live a quiet life overseas with her husband Aparesh Ranjit after marriage, shunning the spotlight at the height of her career. Shilpa recently talked candidly about her choice and said she had no regrets about it.

Speaking about leaving the movie business when she was at the height of her abilities, she said in an interview, “I don’t regret taking a break. I miss being busy, but I married such a sweet, nice and simple man, and that was important for me to start my life. Unfortunately, I left India, which is why it was difficult for me to continue working. If I had gotten married in India, I would have one hundred per cent continued working.”

After meeting her now-husband for the first time, Shilpa acknowledged that she had never wanted to feel at home in Mumbai, much less the entire country. She consented to accompany him abroad. Talking about the same, she said, “It was an easy decision. When it is your choice, things are straightforward. It was my choice. I never wanted to leave Mumbai, as I was very close to my parents. However, after meeting my husband, I said yes to him within one and a half days, knowing that he would be going abroad to study. So the bottom line was that I would also be leaving India. I just liked his honesty so much that I didn’t even think about what I was doing. Everything fell in place.”

Shilpa Shirodkar also discussed the disparity in their educational backgrounds — she is a Class 10 dropout and her husband holds a double MBA — but said she never felt tiny or inadequate in front of him. “I am a 10th fail. My husband is a banker. He holds a double MBA and is well-read, as well as quite different. I can discuss everything with him and his colleagues, as well as the life I have experienced with him. I never felt small in front of him,” she said.

When asked if she received any proposals for movies after getting married, she responded, “At that time, it wasn’t the space when women would get rules after marriage, so I don’t think anybody reached out to me, and I wasn’t such a big star, either. I don’t think I was so popular that people wanted me to come back. People were also happy when they said, ‘Ki gayi toh gayi.’ There are many others.” Shilpa acknowledged that her personal development was influenced by her experience living overseas, adjusting to life without friends, and learning how to make ends meet.

Aakash Chopra, former Indian batter, has openly questioned the team management’s decision to replace Harshit Rana with Anshul Kamboj in the Test squad. With Akash Deep’s fitness still in doubt for the fourth Test, Kamboj was called in as an injury cover, while left-armer Arshdeep Singh has already been ruled out for the Old Trafford match in Manchester with a hand injury. Chopra reminded fans that Harshit had been asked to stay in England after the unofficial Test series, only to be sent home later, and he now wants clarity from the selectors.

“Now that Harshit Rana is missing, the questions start stacking up. How does one figure out the keepers and the dropouts? If the yardstick is India A performance, Anshul did better, but the logic was to stick with Harshit for the sake of continuity,” Chopra explained in a recent YouTube video.

He believes the panel should have held on to Harshit for the sake of team stability, despite Kamboj also being a deserving candidate for the role.

“If that was the plan, then Harshit Rana should still be in the squad. He’s not; Anshul Kamboj is in. No one knows why. Maybe the higher-ups have a reason, but no one’s sharing it. I’m not shocked. Kamboj earned his spot, and now he’s here,” the insider said.

Rana was part of India A and played two Tests in Australia, but the numbers didn’t impress. In the unofficial Test against the England Lions at Canterbury, he bowled 27 overs and took just one wicket while leaking 99 runs.

At 23, he’s still regarded as Gautam Gambhir’s project. He’s the kind of bowler who hits the deck hard, and in Perth he drew attention with an off-cutter that sneaked past Travis Head’s guard. Yet it’s been obvious that he’s still a work-in-progress, not yet ready for red-ball cricket at the highest level.

Shahid Afridi, the captain of the Pakistani cricket team, suggested that politics and sports should be kept apart after the World Championship of Legends match between India and Pakistan was canceled on Sunday. The India Champions team’s Shikhar Dhawan vehemently declined to play against Pakistan in the WCL match in Birmingham, England. Yuvraj Singh, the Pathan brothers, and several other Indian cricket players also refused to play. The game had to be canceled due to the circumstances.

Speaking to reporters after the match was canceled, Afridi bizarrely emphasized the importance of keeping cricket and politics separate, despite having previously made controversial political statements.

“We are here to play cricket, and I’ve always said that cricket should be kept away from politics – it should move forward. A player should be a good ambassador, not a source of embarrassment for their country,” Afridi told reporters.

If India didn’t want to play, they shouldn’t have come to the venue, according to the former captain of the Pakistani national team.

“We’ve come here to play cricket. If [India] didn’t want to play against Pakistan, they should’ve refused before coming here. But now you’ve arrived, even held practice sessions, and then suddenly changed everything in a single day,” he added.

It even appeared that Shahid Afridi referred to Dhawan as a “bad egg” because he was the first to voice his disapproval of the Indo-Pak match in the WCL, first doing so a few months ago and then again on Saturday.

“Sports bring people closer, but if politics gets involved in everything, how will we move forward? Until we sit together and discuss issues, nothing will improve – lack of communication only makes things worse,” he said. “We’ve come here to play cricket, to have one-on-one interactions and friendly conversations. But sometimes, there’s one rotten egg that spoils everything for everyone else.”

“If I had known the match was being stopped because of me, I wouldn’t have even gone to the ground. But cricket should go on. What is Shahid Afridi in front of cricket? Nothing,” he said.

“The game comes first. As a sport, cricket is the biggest thing. Bringing politics into it or an Indian cricketer saying he won’t play against Pakistan – then don’t play, sit out. But sports is bigger, cricket is bigger, and it’s bigger than Shahid Afridi too,” he concluded.
