Born in an indigent Delhi based family, Sunil somehow completed his higher secondary school certificate (SSC) exam. His father was a mechanical labourer and the only earning member in their family of five. His family’s financial condition demanded Sunil earn a living for himself. Soon after SSC, he started doing menial jobs earning Rs 200 odd a day. He did many such blue-collar jobs before joining Domino’s Pizza as a pizza delivery boy in the year 1998. He worked for a long time with one of the Domino’s Pizza outlets in Delhi and performed exceptionally well to become their best-performing employee. His consistent best performance made him the blue-eyed boy for the employer but a devil for other co-workers – he soon resigned in the year 2003.
It was not an impulsive decision. After saving a considerable fund while working at Domino’s, Sunil decided to open up a small food stall in Delhi. The business however did not last long as it was not established with the due legal processes and Sunil got into trouble because of this a couple of times.
After surveying the area, he realized that the locality lacked a good cake shop. That is when he decided to legally open up a Cake shop business in 2007. Of course, it could not have been possible without the help of his friend who loaned him Rs 58,000 to open up his business which he named ‘Flying Cakes’.
Flying Cakes was an ambitious project for Sunil compared to the earlier roadside eateries, but the business was extremely challenging due to the low margins. Nevertheless, the only certainty about time is that it changes. And with this thought, Sunil continued his struggle.
One day a woman working at a nearby HCL visited Flying Cake to order for her son’s birthday. The woman was head of HCL’s admin department – the quality of the cake baked by Sunil impressed her, and Flying Cake soon began to receive corporate orders from her.
Sunil was eager to do business with excellent quality. He realized what it was like to eat fresh cakes. They ensured that the cake was prepared only on order and delivered in the lowest possible time to ensure freshness. To ensure quality and to know the importance of his presence, Sunil worked round the clock in the early days of flying cakes.

A native of the Kupwara district, Dr Ruveda Salam made history when she became the first woman from the Kashmir Valley to qualify in the Union Public Service Commission examination in 2013.
She did her MBBS from the Government Medical College in Srinagar. Currently, she serves as an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Chennai. She passed the UPSC exam again this year. With an improved rank, she has fulfilled her dream of being an IAS officer. She in her interview has said that when she was growing up in Kashmir her father often used to advise her for becoming an IAS officer. It is from that day that the idea of becoming an IAS officer has stuck her mind. This kept on inspiring her and then she decided to move ahead with this aim.
She cleared UPSC exam in her very first attempt. She was selected in the Indian Police Service cadre. Then she had gone for training to Hyderabad. Talking about her training, she said it was very straining. Physically it was very hard. After finishing her training, she was posted in Tamil Nadu as an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Chennai. Before applying for UPSC, she got into medical college. Even at that time, she used to read a lot. She even cleared the Kashmir State Administration Service exam which is not as tough as the IAS.
However, she is not neglecting her current job as an ACP in Chennai where she starts her day at 7 in the morning and works hard often till midnight. She used to have three rounds at night per week, monitor traffic and attend weekly as well as monthly meetings regularly. Moreover, she used to receive public petitions, especially from women.
It’s a strenuous job, but for Ruveda, duty comes first and she has already shown in her life that she will not shy away from hard work.
She received another prestigious honour last year when she was selected as one of the five young cadres from India to present a paper at the Youth-20 summit during the G-20 Nations meet in Sydney. Now she also gives regular motivational speeches to the younger generation, particularly for the girls from Jammu and Kashmir, encouraging them to appear for the UPSC examination.
Some people in various parts of India have a perception of her being anti-Indian due to her status of a Kashmiri girl that she thinks can be changed through her attitude. Many even think that Kashmiri girls cannot compete at national level. Ruveda wants to change this perception by showing her mettle. The reasons for their failure could be attributed to poverty and lack of devotion which stood in the way of these students.
We know that IIT JEE is the most stringent competitive exam in India mandatory for entry to world renowned Indian Institute of Technology. It requires years of preparation and dedication to crack this exam. Anand Kumar realised that though these students from impoverished families had the talent but they lacked devotion to clear IIT JEE. This thought led him to form a group of 30 students from socially backward families and structured his first batch of Super 30 in 2002. These students were provided exemplary training essential to crack JEE along with lodging facilities for the whole year. Their hard work and perseverance bore fruit when eighteen out of the thirty students cracked IIT JEE 2013. Super 30 achieved what it aimed at and so did the students. Now the whole country knew about this special batch that Anand Kumar ran from a modest town.
Since then every year, his institute would hold a competitive test to select 30 students from the economically backward sections for the Super 30 program, in which he would tutor them, provide them with study materials and took care of their lodging for a year absolutely free.
Most of the 30 students managed to get into the IITs or other prestigious institutions. Anand was offered financial help from governmental and private agencies, both national and international, but the professor declined them as he wanted to sustain Super 30 through his own efforts.
