In Tamil Nadu, a 23-year-old woman has been appointed as the first Malayali judge in the Civil Court.

V Sripathy, a resident of Yelagiri Hills in the Thirupathur district, passed the TNPSC Civil Judge test. Sripathy is the eldest daughter of Kaliappan and Malliga, and was born at Thuvinjikuppam, which borders a restricted forest near Thiruvannamalai.

Chief Minister MK Stalin praised Sripathy’s achievement, saying, “It is encouraging to see a tribal girl from a poor hill village accomplish this at such a young age.”

The appointment of Sripathy as a judge is indicative of our government’s resolve to provide employment opportunities for educated Tamil people top priority. Thank you to her husband and mother for their support.

Udhayanidhi Stalin, the minister of sports for Tamil Nadu, also commended Sripathy’s tenacity.

According to media reports, the Mumbai civic authority plans to implement water rationing in the upcoming days due to the city’s seven lakes’ diminishing water supply and the absence of other sources. 

The water stock in these lakes is at 7.14 lakh million litres (ML), or 49%, which is the lowest level in the previous three years. Mumbai’s water stock was 54% in February of last year and 57% in 2022. 

According to a municipal official, the water supply might reach 14.47 lakh ML on October 1st, at which point the city will have an adequate supply of water because September and October are predicted to have strong rainfall in the lakes’ catchment region.

He said, however, that if this year’s rainfall is lower than usual, the water shortfall may persist. The BMC will pressure the irrigation department to obtain extra drinking water from Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes, according to the newspaper.

P. Velrasu, an extra municipal commissioner for projects, stated that if the irrigation department rejects the request to provide for more drinking water, the civic body will eventually have to implement water reductions.  

The monsoon arrived later than usual last year, forcing the city government to impose a 10% water reduction on July 1. The report also stated that on August 9, the incision was removed after the lakes were partially filled by the intense rains in July. 

The BMC has requested expressions of interest in performing cloud seeding in order to reduce air pollution in the city by producing artificial rain. But because seasoned businesses did not respond to the civic organisation, the plans have been delayed for the time being.

The BMC provides 3,900 ML of water to the city every day. Water is extracted from Lakes Tansa, Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tulsi, and Vihar.

The Police Superintendent must assemble a special team to apprehend and present the former MP in court. Senior prosecution officer Amarnath Tiwari claimed the former MP did not appear in court on Monday despite a seventh non-bailable warrant.

Actress and politician Jaya Prada is absconding in two code of conduct cases. Jaya Prada has been in trouble before. The actress was convicted in an earlier case last year in Chennai. She received a six-month prison sentence and a Rs 5,000 fine. Reports say Jaya Prada didn’t pay her theater workers’ ESI. The former MP reportedly confessed the charges and offered to pay the overdue dues and seek case dismissal. The court rejected her appeal and fined and imprisoned her.

Lalitha Rani Rao, known as Jaya Prada, worked mostly in Hindi and Tamil films in the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. She earned fame in 1974 after being handed a three-minute dancing number in Bhoomi Kosam.

Jaya Prada has appeared in many Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil films. She appeared in various TV series.

The U.S. CDC plans to drop its five-day COVID-19 isolation recommendations under new guidance planned by the agency, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.

The health agency plans to recommend people who test positive for COVID-19 to take a call on when to end isolation based on their symptoms.

People with mild and improving symptoms would no longer need to stay home if they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours, the report said citing CDC officials familiar with the matter, adding the new recommendations would not apply to hospitals and other health-care settings with more vulnerable populations.

The government has yet to sign off on the guidelines the agency is expected to release in April for public feedback, the report added.

“There are no updates to COVID guidelines to announce at this time. We will continue to make decisions based on the best evidence and science to keep communities healthy and safe,” CDC said in an email response.

The guidelines for isolation when tested positive for COVID-19 has not been updated since Dec. 2021, when the CDC had shortened the recommended isolation time for Americans with asymptomatic cases to five days from the previous guidance of 10 days.

CDC data showed nearly 86 per cent of COVID-19 cases in the United States, as of Jan. 19, were caused by the sub-variant JN.1, classified as a “variant of interest” by the World Health Organization.

In January, India’s Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation fell to 0.27 per cent, largely due to a decrease in food prices. This marked a significant decrease from December 2023.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation fell to 0.27 percent in January due to falling food prices.

This is lower than December 2023’s WPI inflation of 0.73 percent. WPI inflation was negative from April to October but positive in November at 0.39 percent.

On Wednesday, the commerce and industry ministry reported 0.27 percent annual inflation based on the All India Wholesale Price Index for January 2024 compared to January 2023.

Food inflation saw a decline to 6.85 per cent in January, down from 9.38 per cent in December 2023. Vegetable inflation fell to 19.71% from 26.3% the month before. Pulses had 16.06 percent WPI inflation, while fruits had 1.01 percent.

January 2023 wholesale inflation was 4.8%, a considerable drop from the previous year.
