WFI Chief Sanjay Singh Backs Vinesh Phogat, Holds Her Staff Responsible For Fiasco

The world of Indian wrestling was shaken recently as Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief Sanjay Singh voiced his strong disapproval of the support staff surrounding star wrestler Vinesh Phogat. In a candid and critical statement, Singh placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of Phogat’s support team, accusing them of ‘letting down’ India by failing to ensure that Vinesh Phogat remains within the weight limit.

Vinesh Phogat, one of India’s most celebrated wrestlers was participating in the 50 Kg freestyle wrestling event but she got disqualified at the Paris Olympics 2024 after she weighed 100 gms more than the limit. It is being said that she weighed 1 Kg more one night before the final bout, she didn’t sleep, she kept running, skipping etc., to reduce weight, she cut her hair and even drew her blood out but still she remained 100 gm more than the weight limit.

As of now, Vinesh has filed a plea in CAS and has demanded joint Silver medal, the decision is awaited as of now.

Sanjay Singh, the WFI Chief, did not mince words when addressing these concerns, he said, “It’s a failure of Vinesh’s support staff… Maintaining weight is the duty of the staff. I don’t know how she was trying to lose her weight..Her team would know that.”

He further said, “I do not consider it Vinesh’s fault because she was performing exceptionally well. Our coach and supporting staff, including the physio and nutritionist, should have ensured she did not face any issues. This situation warrants an investigation, and I demand the Indian government take strict action against those responsible because they have let down 1.4 billion people of India.”

Do you agree with Sanjay Singh?
