Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu are often regarded as one of Bollywood’s most iconic couples. Despite their 22-year age difference, their love and devotion towards each other have redefined romance in Indian cinema. Saira Banu even left her acting career to dedicate herself fully to their marriage. However, their relationship faced a significant challenge during a brief period when Dilip Kumar married Asma Rehman, 16 years after his marriage to Saira.
In his autobiography, The Substance and the Shadow, Dilip Kumar acknowledged the difficult time when news of his second marriage to Asma Rehman became public in 1982. Saira Banu, who trusted Dilip Kumar deeply, was hurt when she found out about the marriage through tabloids. Dilip admitted, “It was very painful for me to console her as she trusted me and loved me unconditionally.” He had promised Saira that there would never be a second marriage, which made the revelation even more difficult for her to process.
Despite the emotional blow, Saira Banu stood by Dilip Kumar. He expressed his deep regret, saying, “I can never forget or forgive myself for the hurt I caused to Saira and the shattering of the unshakeable faith she had in me.” Saira’s decision to support him, despite the betrayal, was influenced by the advice of her mother, Naseem Banu, and her brother, Sultan Ahmed. Dilip Kumar requested Saira to give him time to resolve the situation legally and restore the sanctity of their marriage, which she agreed to do, showing her unwavering loyalty.
To reaffirm his commitment to Saira, Dilip signed a letter of commitment to her, long before the legal processes for divorce with Asma Rehman were completed. Several close friends, including Rajni Patel, his wife Bakul Patel, Sharad Pawar, and Mama Kapadia, stood by Dilip during this trying time.
After overcoming this challenging period, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu remained devoted to each other for the rest of his life. Their bond, despite the turmoil, remained strong until the legendary actor passed away on July 7, 2021.
