When Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh suddenly got married in 1991, it wasn’t just a quiet affair — it was a total shocker. The couple, caught in the throes of a whirlwind romance, decided to take the plunge without informing even their closest family members. The most stunned of all? Saif’s mother, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, who reportedly only learned of the wedding after it had already happened.

The surprise didn’t end at home. Industry gossip quickly swirled that Amrita herself had been emotionally overwhelmed by the swift turn of events. Some claimed that the emotional fallout affected her deeply, even causing a breakdown on the very first day of shooting for her film Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in 1992.

However, filmmaker Aziz Mirza, who directed the film, has firmly denied any such disruption on set. Speaking with Radio Nasha, he offered a more grounded account. “Nahi, kuchh nahi hua (No, nothing happened). I don’t think there was any panic. Saif used to come to set,” he said, brushing aside the rumors with calm confidence.

Mirza also recalled a candid moment with a young Saif Ali Khan, who was still finding his footing in the industry. “Mashallah, he did very well in life. He was thrown out of a film, by I think, HS Rawail. He came to RK Studio and said, ‘I’ve been fired from the film,’ because he turned up late or something,” Mirza shared, giving a glimpse into the struggles that preceded Saif’s rise to stardom.

While the secrecy of the marriage and its initial ripple effect made headlines at the time, those close to the couple now remember it as a bold move by two people in love — a private decision that unexpectedly captured public imagination. Decades later, the story still lingers as one of Bollywood’s most talked-about secret weddings, wrapped in both mystery and nostalgia.
