When Shah Rukh Khan Spoke Against Trend Of Entourages In Bollywood

Before earning the title of the ‘King of Bollywood’, Shah Rukh Khan began his journey in acting on television. Transitioning from TV to films, he faced a cultural shift in the Bollywood industry, particularly with its focus on entourages and star tantrums.

In a candid 1991 interview with a popular magazine, conducted before his Bollywood debut, Shah Rukh expressed his disapproval of the industry’s lavish practices and lack of authenticity.

He remarked on his observations while working in Mumbai, “I find the entire set-up quite funny, you know. I’ve been shooting in Bombay for the past one month. Suddenly, there are guys wanting to hold my cup of tea, tie my shoelaces, and hold my umbrella over my head. Why? I’m not a f**king retard. I tied my shoelaces before I came into films, I’ll tie them now.”

Shah Rukh openly criticized the culture of entourages, stating, “This thing about seven people walking behind an actor—why does he need them? But it is supposed to be done. In Hollywood, there is no concept of spot boys.”

He also condemned the lack of respect some stars showed towards crew members, “I’ve seen actors and actresses behave so funnily with people around them. They have absolutely no respect for people. It seems like these stars have just come here to earn some money, fame, and glory and throw their weight around. Acting be damned.”

The actor emphasized his commitment to staying grounded, stating, “I do not care much for the frills that come along with this profession. I want to keep in touch with reality. I want to keep in touch with myself.”

Now, more than 30 years later, Shah Rukh Khan has emerged as a global icon, celebrated not only for his talent and success but also for his humility and respect for others. His stance on staying true to oneself and valuing authenticity remains an integral part of his legacy.
