Located in West Bengal, Asansol is widely known as the “Land of Black Diamond.” The nickname comes from the region’s rich coal reserves and its long-standing connection with mining and heavy industry. Government sources highlight just how important these reserves are. Official estimates say the Raniganj Coalfield holds strong potential for coal bed methane production, with output projected at around 12 million cubic metres per day, an energy source considered valuable for the future.
Administrative records from Paschim Bardhaman district also describe Asansol as a major industrial hub with vast coal mining operations. It is the second-largest city in West Bengal and serves as the district headquarters, making it both an economic and administrative centre.
Across India, many cities carry special nicknames shaped by history and geography. Asansol stands out among them. Its title, “Land of Black Diamond,” reflects not just the abundance of coal beneath its land, but also the vital role the city has played in mining, industry, and regional growth.
