World Brain Tumour Day 2023: know the theme, causes, treatment & signs

World Brain Tumor Day raises awareness of everything related to brain tumors. Find out the theme, causes, treatment, and signs.

Every year on June 8, World Brain Tumor Day is celebrated to raises awareness of everything related to brain tumors, including its causes, treatment, and signs.

This year’s theme for World Brain Tumour Day is “Protect yourself, avoid stress”

A brain tumor is a controlled proliferation of aberrant brain tissues, albeit not all abnormal brain tissues are cancerous or malignant. Brain tumors with cancer are known to develop more quickly than those without malignancy. Depending on where they are located, brain tumors may or may not exhibit symptoms. It’s possible that symptoms won’t appear until the tumor has grown significantly if it forms in less active regions of the brain.

Brain tumors may develop in or near brain tissue, or they may migrate from other regions of the body to the brain, a condition known as metastatic brain tumor.

What signs indicate a brain tumor?

The location and size of the tumor affect the symptoms of a brain tumor. Some tumors directly harm brain tissue by encroaching on it, while others put pressure on the nearby brain.

1. Headaches, which can get worse with exercise or in the morning and become much more severe.

2. There are several seizure kinds that people might have. Some medicines can aid in their prevention or management. Motor seizures, often known as convulsions, are abrupt, unconscious muscular movements.

3. Vision issues including double vision, fuzzy vision, or sudden loss of visual field might potentially be signs of an underlying tumor.

4. You should also be cautious if you experience persistent nausea, vomiting, or inexplicable dizziness. These signs and symptoms may be brought on by a tumor-induced rise in cerebral pressure.

How are tumors in the brain identified?

Physical examinations that are conducted to diagnose brain tumors include extensive neurological evaluations. Your doctor will check your cranial nerves for wellness. These nerves are brain-derived. Your doctor will use an ophthalmoscope to examine your eyes.

Your doctor can then examine how your pupils respond to light. Additionally, it enables your doctor to view straight into your eyes to check for any optic nerve enlargement. The optic nerve may alter when the pressure inside the skull rises.

Following the physical examination, your doctor can recommend further testing. These could consist of:
the head’s CT scan

Your doctor can scan your body more thoroughly using a CT scan than they could with an X-ray scanner. Either contrast or no contrast can be used in this. A specific dye is used to provide contrast during a CT scan of the head, which enables medical professionals to more clearly view particular structures, such as blood arteries.

Your doctor may employ a specialized dye during a head MRI to aid in the detection of tumors. A CT scan uses radiation, but an MRI doesn’t, and often produces considerably more comprehensive images of the actual structures of the brain.

A dye that is injected into your artery is used in this research. Your brain’s arteries receive the dye. It enables your doctor to observe how the tumors’ blood supply appears. When the procedure is taking place, this knowledge is helpful.
brain tumor treatment

A brain tumor’s course of therapy is determined by:

1. The tumor’s type and size
2. Where the tumor is located
3. General wellbeing

Surgery is the most popular form of therapy for cancerous brain tumors. The objective is to eliminate as much of the cancer as possible without harming the brain’s healthy areas. While some tumors can be safely removed due to their position, others may only be able to be removed in part due to their location. Even a partial removal of the tumor can be beneficial for patients with brain cancer.
