Xiaomi Showcases Next-Gen Modular Optical System at MWC 2025

Ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2025), Xiaomi has officially launched the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and the standard Xiaomi 15 for international markets. These smartphones will be available for purchase in India starting March 11. While the base version was initially introduced in China alongside a Pro model, the latter will not be released globally.

In addition to these smartphone launches, Xiaomi also showcased its groundbreaking Modular Optical System, an innovative imaging technology that allows users to capture DSLR-quality photos using a customized external lens.

Xiaomi’s Modular Optical System

At MWC 2025, Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi Modular Optical System, which is still in its concept stage and not yet available to the public. The teaser featured a customized Xiaomi 15 with a magnetic ring on the back, similar to Apple’s MagSafe technology. This ring allows users to attach an external camera module equipped with a large sensor and a zoom lens.

Xiaomi explained that this design integrates the external lens seamlessly with the smartphone’s built-in hardware. As a result, users can edit and share photos just like they would with a native smartphone camera. The system is powered by LaserLink technology, ensuring instant data transfer between the external lens and the phone.

The Xiaomi Modular Optical System includes a 35mm all-aspherical glass lens with a wide aperture and a 100-megapixel Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor, promising excellent low-light photography.

Additionally, at MWC 2025, Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi 15 Ultra Photography Kit Legend Edition, featuring a detachable shutter button and a USB Type-C camera grip, enhancing the photography experience for users.
