Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy has been the subject of intense scrutiny, particularly as this was their first time hosting the prestigious tournament. Embarrassing losses to New Zealand and India sealed their fate, knocking them out of the semifinals race and drawing criticism from several former players, including Sunil Gavaskar, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis.
Concerns over the state of Pakistan cricket have intensified, with Akram calling for a complete overhaul of the white-ball squad and the introduction of young, fearless cricketers. Meanwhile, Gavaskar has taken a strong stance, claiming that even a second-string Indian team could defeat Pakistan given their current form. He also questioned the quality of Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure, drawing comparisons with the Indian Premier League, which has consistently produced top-tier players for India.
Former India cricketer Yograj Singh weighed in on the debate, suggesting that Wasim Akram should step away from his commentary duties and take a more active role in rebuilding Pakistan’s cricket team. In a surprising move, he even offered to coach the Pakistan squad himself, promising to transform them into a competitive unit within a year.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with Akram’s critical stance, Yograj Singh questioned why the former pacer wasn’t working to revive Pakistan cricket instead of merely pointing out its flaws. “Wasim Akram is earning money doing commentary. Go back to your country, organise a camp of these players. I want to see which one of you can help Pakistan win the World Cup and if not then resign. Mein jata hoon, ek saal mein team khadi kar kay dikhaunga tum yaad rakhoge (I can coach them. I will build this team in one year and you’ll remember it),” Yograj told News18.
He further emphasized the importance of dedication and hard work, saying, “It’s all about passion. I am spending 12 hours here (at his own academy). You will have to give your blood and sweat for your own country.”
