“You Don’t Know How To Act,” Vidhu Vinod Chopra Almost Fired This Actress Who Later Became Superstar

1942: A Love Story, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, is widely regarded as the film that launched Manisha Koirala’s career into the spotlight, showcasing her talent and transforming her image from a promising newcomer to a capable actor. However, as Manisha recently shared, this journey was far from easy. The actor revealed that she nearly got fired from the movie due to her initial struggles with the demanding expectations set by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

In an interview, Manisha recounted her early difficulties, admitting that she faced criticism during her first screen test for the role. Recalling her experience, she shared, “I had never done something like this. At that time, this project was massive. And I got scolded during my first screen test. Vinod had told me that you don’t know how to act.” Determined to prove herself, Manisha worked hard to improve, eventually persuading Chopra to give her another chance.

Her experience taught her the importance of dedication and resilience. She realized that she needed to commit fully to her craft to meet the film’s high standards. “I got it with a lot of hard work,” Manisha said, adding that script readings at Chopra’s home also played a key role in helping her understand her character.

The film, set in pre-Independence India, starred Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff, two established actors at the time. Acting opposite such big stars added to the pressure on Manisha. Chopra was clear that her character needed to stand out in the film, telling her, “Look, Manisha, both the superstars are in love with you in the film. So you better do everything to look beautiful…It shouldn’t feel like I’m lying as a director. The audience shouldn’t feel cheated.”

Although new to the industry, Manisha recognized the value of Chopra’s guidance and credits his support with helping her navigate the film’s challenges. While she initially struggled to understand some of the director’s expectations, his mentorship ultimately enabled her to deliver a memorable performance.
