Stepping into an air-conditioned room feels like instant relief during peak summer heat. But what many people don’t realise is that this comfort can sometimes come with hidden health issues if not used properly.

Medical experts say that while air conditioning is almost essential during hot months, the way it is maintained and used plays a huge role in how it affects your health. They have observed that many people actually feel worse in summer because of poorly maintained AC environments rather than the heat outside.

One of the most common problems comes from dirty filters. When AC filters are not cleaned or replaced regularly, they collect dust and pollutants. Once the system is turned on, these particles circulate in the air, which can trigger allergies or breathing discomfort, especially for those who are already sensitive.

People dealing with conditions like bronchitis or sinusitis may face even more trouble. Experts explain that very cold and dry air can irritate the airways, leading to increased coughing in bronchitis patients. At the same time, sudden temperature changes and dry air can worsen sinus-related issues such as congestion, headaches, facial pressure, and blocked noses.

Another common mistake is setting the AC temperature too low. Many people prefer extremely cold rooms to escape the heat, but constantly moving between very hot outdoor weather and freezing indoor spaces can put stress on the body. Experts suggest maintaining a moderate temperature, ideally between 24–26°C, to avoid unnecessary strain on the respiratory system.

Indoor air quality is another concern that often goes unnoticed. In many offices and buildings, air-conditioning systems simply recycle the same air with very little fresh air coming in. This can lead to symptoms like headaches, dry throat, tiredness, coughing, and even breathing difficulties. This condition is often referred to as “sick building syndrome,” and it can affect people who spend long hours indoors.

Poor maintenance of AC units can also lead to more serious problems. Moisture buildup inside the system can encourage the growth of mold and bacteria. When these harmful particles spread through the air, they can worsen respiratory issues, particularly in people with asthma or other lung conditions.

Experts stress that a few simple steps can make a big difference. Regular servicing of air conditioners, timely cleaning or replacement of filters, and allowing fresh air to circulate by opening windows occasionally can help maintain better air quality. Staying hydrated is also important to reduce dryness and discomfort caused by air-conditioned environments.

Air conditioners are undoubtedly a necessity in summer, but using them wisely is key. With proper care and simple precautions, you can enjoy the comfort without putting your health at risk.
