Social media is exploding with criticism of the Tamil film Annapoorani, starring Nayanthara, for what some are calling “anti-Hindu scenes.” Netflix started streaming the movie on December 29, after it was first released on December 1.
Netflix removed the movie after receiving a lot of negative feedback. Additionally, a Madhya Pradesh FIR was also filed against the film producers. Zed Studios, who co-produced the film, apologised recently and made it clear that the film was not meant to offend Brahmin and Hindu sensibilities. The production company made it clear in their announcement that the film would not be available on Netflix again until the contentious parts had been removed.
Faced criticism for offending ‘Hindu’ sensitivities
“At a time when the whole world is rejoicing in anticipation of the Pran Pratishtha of Bhagwan Shri Ram Mandir, this anti-Hindu film Annapoorani has been released on Netflix, produced by Zed Studios, Naad Sstudios, and Trident Arts,” wrote Ramesh on January 6 on X, sharing the complaint he had submitted. He encouraged the police in Mumbai to file a formal complaint for “injuring religious sentiments.”
Additionally, he wrote a description of the incidents that upset him, stating, “A Hindu Poojari’s daughter offers Namaz to make Biryani.” This film promotes love jihad. Actor Farhan convinces the actress to have meat by pointing her that Bhagwan Shri Ram ate meat as well.” Nayanthara, Jai, Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, Punit Goenka, Zed Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, and Netflix India Chief Monika Shergill were also named in the case.
