Zika Virus Guidelines for Pregnant women

New measures and updated guidelines Pune Municipal Corporation has strengthened its surveillance measures after Zika virus infections were confirmed. They confirmed the virus in two patients from the Erandwane area in Pune city. Officials issued a five-kilometre radius alert that Zika infection can lead to microcephaly in pregnant women. Furthermore, they reported its infection among a 46-year-old doctor from Erandwane and his 15-year-old daughter from Erandwane on June 20-21.

Zika virus infections are typically transmitted via Aedes mosquito bites – the same vector responsible for dengue and chikungunya viruses. Although most individuals who become infected remain symptom-free (up to 80%), others may exhibit mild symptoms. The symptoms may include fever, rash, conjunctivitis, body aches or joint pains. This can create great concern among expectant mothers during an outbreak like Zika’s recent spread. Dr Mansi Sharma of Motherhood Hospital in Kharadi advised pregnant women to take extra precautions. Zika virus infections spread through mosquito bites during gestation, as this has been linked with serious health complications including congenital abnormalities.

For optimal gestation outcomes and to decrease risks during gestation, pregnant women are ideally advised to avoid areas with active transmission. They need to take protective measures like wearing long-sleeved clothing or booking air-conditioned or screened accommodations must be implemented beforehand if travel cannot be avoided.” Zika can lead to fatal complications for newborn babies. Dr. Anuranjita Pallavi, Consultant Gynecologist and Infertility Specialist from Medicover Hospitals Navi Mumbai advised pregnant and intending-to-conceive women to remain aware of the Zika virus when planning or trying for pregnancy.

Zika virus has been linked with microcephaly, in which infants are born with abnormally small heads. Furthermore, Zika can lead to fatal consequences in babies including eye problems, hearing loss and seizures. There has yet been no vaccine or treatment solution is available for this condition. Pregnant women must take measures against mosquito bites. They need to cover water storage containers and clear away accumulation in flower pots. Additionally, they need to Keep their house tidy and avoid areas known for Zika virus transmission.
