On Wednesday, the Income Tax Department carried out wide-ranging searches at the Sagardighi home of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Bayron Biswas and other locations connected to him, such as a school and a hospital.
Early in the morning, a sizable team of law enforcement and tax officers launched the searches at many of Biswas’s residences in West Bengal. Raids were carried out concurrently at the MLA’s present home, a warehouse, a nursing home, and many other locations. Furthermore, there were searches at Byron’s school in Raghunathganj.
The activities were predicated on intelligence, indicating that the Trinamool leader owns a nursing home, beedi production facilities, and secret enterprises. Sources claim that the goal of the raids was to gather data on the associated commercial dealings.
Byron and his associates, who manage his company, were allegedly visited and interrogated at their residences by the Income Tax Department. The income tax searches at the home of TMC MLA in Domkal, Jafikul Islam, took place concurrently with the raids at Bayron Biswas’s properties.
Significantly, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to meet on the subject of unpaid state debts on the same day that these central agency searches take place.
The only Congress member of state for West Bengal, changed sides shortly after the Sagardighi assembly’s by-election in 2023. In Sagardighi, Biswas, supported by the Left, had defeated Debashish Banerjee of the Trinamool by a margin of around 23,000 votes.
