PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi reiterated his unwavering stance that the Champions Trophy must be hosted entirely in Pakistan. This declaration comes amid growing pressure from behind-the-scenes negotiations involving top ICC officials, urging Pakistan to adopt the hybrid model.
“Pakistan’s respect is first and foremost. Rest, you will see what happens. Our stance is very clear; we have made it clear in the past,” Naqvi said.
Mohsin Naqvi insisted that Pakistan is capable of addressing any security concerns raised by India or other teams, adding that all qualified teams except India are prepared to visit Pakistan.
India’s reluctance to participate in the Champions Trophy on Pakistani soil raises concerns over the financial viability of the event. The BCCI’s influence, driven by India’s substantial share of global cricket revenue, plays a significant role in international cricket. If India withdraws, the ICC risks a major financial setback, potentially making the tournament unprofitable.
The ICC has been engaged in discussions with PCB and BCCI to resolve the issue, with a source confirming that the tournament schedule is expected to be announced soon.
“We are still in discussions with the host and participating members on the Champions Trophy schedule. It should be out soon, likely in a couple of days or so,” an ICC insider revealed.
Mohsin Naqvi extended an olive branch by urging Indian cricket authorities to directly communicate their concerns. He expressed confidence in Pakistan’s ability to provide a secure environment for the tournament.
“If India have any concerns, we will talk, and we will ensure that concerns are taken care of. I don’t think there is any reason why India can’t come to Pakistan.”
The ICC is in a delicate position, balancing the competing interests of two cricketing powerhouses. While Pakistan is determined to host the event exclusively, India’s participation is critical for the tournament’s financial success. A middle ground is imperative, but it remains uncertain whether either side will soften its stance.
The Champions Trophy schedule announcement, expected soon, could provide more clarity on how this high-stakes situation unfolds.
