The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formed a specialized three-member team at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru to oversee the recovery of vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah as he prepares for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Bumrah is currently undergoing rehabilitation after recently completing a five-week period of complete rest following a back injury sustained during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s Sydney Test. This period of rest involved a full break from activity, including gym sessions. Now, he is in recovery at the CoE, with the goal of being fit in time for the upcoming ICC tournament.
The rehabilitation process is being closely managed by Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach Rajnikanth Sivagnanam and physio Thulasi Ram Yuvraj, with Dr. Nitin Patel, the Head of Sports Science, overseeing the entire recovery effort. A senior BCCI official explained that while S&C coach Soham Desai and physio Kamlesh Jain remain informed about Bumrah’s progress, they are not directly involved at this stage. Desai is currently accompanying the Indian team for their ongoing series against England at home.
As part of CoE’s standard procedure, a dedicated team comprising a strength-and-conditioning coach, a physio for injury management, and a coach to monitor technical skills are assigned to guide the recovery process. If Bumrah is cleared to resume bowling, it is expected that Troy Cooley, the fast-bowling coach at CoE, will supervise this aspect of his rehabilitation.
The final assessment of Jasprit Bumrah’s readiness for the Champions Trophy will be made by Dr. Patel and the medical team, with the details sent to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar. Both head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma will also be kept updated on his status. The BCCI intends to make a decision on Bumrah’s participation only when absolutely necessary, closely monitoring his progress until the last moment.
