Reports: Jasprit Bumrah Will Be Included In ICC Champions Squad But No Place For Nair & Samson

Jasprit Bumrah, the star Indian fast bowler, is on track to be included in India’s 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to be announced on Saturday, January 18. Reports from India Today suggest that despite his ongoing back issue, Bumrah will be named in the squad, which chief selector Ajit Agarkar will reveal during a press conference at Wankhede Stadium following the selection committee meeting. However, his participation will hinge on his fitness levels.

Currently dealing with a back injury, Bumrah refrained from bowling in the second innings of the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which took place from January 3 to 6, 2025. The Ahmedabad-born pacer, who last featured in a 50-over match during the ODI World Cup final against Australia on November 19, 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, is also expected to be selected for the three-match ODI series against England.

Selectors are keen on having Jasprit Bumrah play at least one competitive match before the Champions Trophy to evaluate his fitness and make a final decision regarding his spot in the squad.

Meanwhile, Karun Nair, despite his scintillating form, is unlikely to make it into India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series and the Champions Trophy. The 33-year-old right-handed batter has been in exceptional touch, amassing 752 runs in eight matches for Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. His batting average stands at a staggering 752.00, including five centuries from seven innings. However, selectors reportedly believe it would be unwise to recall him after such a long gap, as he last represented India in 2017. His most recent 50-over appearance for India dates back to June 13, 2016, against Zimbabwe in Harare.

Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter, has been named in India’s T20I squad for the five-match series against England but is unlikely to be considered for the ODI series or the Champions Trophy. Reports indicate his decision to skip the Vijay Hazare Trophy has not been well-received by BCCI officials and selectors, diminishing his chances for a spot in the ODI lineup.
